The program in Industrial Design is seeking early-career Post-Graduate Designers/Researchers-in-Residence to teach, conduct research, and engage new audiences and partners to expand the scope of perspectives currently offered in the Industrial Design program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The opportunities will be two-year, full-time, benefit eligible positions with a start date of August 16, 2023.
These post-graduate residencies are intended to support early career individuals in Industrial Design and Industrial Design’s intersections with other fields, whose teaching and scholarly and professional work mobilize design methods and processes critically toward emerging technologies and industrial manufacturing, and also user experience, and social concerns and whose work is enriched by their lived experience related to age, gender, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, sexuality, diverse abilities, and/or economic inequality. In their scholarship and teaching, awardees will be expected to engage communities within and outside of the University of Illinois, the College of FAA, and the School of Art and Design. Awardees will be encouraged to develop strong links to other units on campus in their scholarly work.
Responsibilities:
Candidates will contribute to the BFA and MFA programs’ diverse and proactive approaches to leading the design field through research, pedagogy, and service. Through their teaching, research, service, and public engagement, candidates will support the broader equity goals set by the College of Fine and Applied Arts to create and contribute to just, equitable, and sustainable communities, and encourage these qualities in the undergraduate (BFA) and the graduate (MFA) programs in Industrial Design, the School of Art & Design, and the University of Illinois.
Research responsibilities presume candidates will develop and grow a body of scholarly work over the course of their appointment. Teaching responsibilities consist of two courses over two semesters (1/1). These will include core and elective undergraduate courses and studios. Course assignments are based on departmental need. Salary is commensurate with experience. Additional responsibilities include service through shared governance to the department, school, college, campus, university, discipline, and/or the local community. Candidates will participate in regular assessments of their teaching, research, and service efforts.
Qualifications:
As this position is primarily based in the Industrial Design program, familiarity with current and historical approaches to designing products, devices, objects, services, and experiences will be required. Knowledge and familiarity with industrial manufacturing is preferred. However, we seek applicants who are pushing beyond traditional approaches to re-center those excluded by the discipline, or to invent new methodologies and approaches. Areas of particular interest include, computer sciences, healthcare and health-assistive devices, design for and with neurodiversity, new materials, deployability for disaster relief and community resilience, applied experimentation in industrial design, collaboration across disciplines and with community partners, and design to reimagine inequities faced by historically marginalized communities.
Candidates are required to have a terminal graduate degree in design, engineering, or a related field. Candidates whose terminal degree is outside industrial design need to demonstrate an understanding of design process, and academic experience in creative disciplines with a focus in 3-D work. Candidates should demonstrate a nascent record of scholarly and/or professional research, design work, publications, and/or exhibitions, teaching experience, and have a strong capacity to engage with contemporary industrial design as a social, aesthetic, technical, collaborative, and professional discipline.
We encourage individuals with MDES, MFA, MARCH, DDES, Ph.D. in design or a related field or a BFA, BDES, or BSAS/BAAS with an advanced degree in another area to apply.
