Summary
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is recruiting well-qualified applicants for a HR Generalist (Associate) position to staff a localized HR operation. The primary purpose of these positions is to assist LSA departments with day-to-day administration of activities encompassing several areas of HR management.
You will be the face and brain of HR for your assigned region.
You will be the go-to resource for LSA faculty and staff in navigating HR processes.
You will be assigned to work as an HR partner for several departments that are part of a region or division within LSA.
You will collaborate with Senior HR Representatives, the LSA HR Transaction Team, the Labor Relations Lead, and the LSA HR Academic Appointment Specialists.

Responsibilities*
Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
General HR Management
Assist faculty supervisors and administrators with general information about the University, LSA, and with completing activities and answering questions related to University, LSA, and department policies, procedures and practices.
Advise units about administration of academic and non-academic appointments; initiate and/or triage HR transactions with LSA HR Transaction Team; monitor appointment end dates, requesting extensions or ensuring handling of process to end appointments
Create or provide reports containing HR data to help inform departmental decisions
Recruiting and Employment
Advise faculty supervisors and Departmental Administrators on the hiring process for work-study students and temporary positions
Advise Departmental Administrators on the posting of LEO Lecturer positions, including ensuring contractual language is met.
Implement selection procedures to assess applicants for positions to help determine best qualified applicants.
Work with faculty supervisors and other department personnel to facilitate the hiring, extensions/amendments, for Research Fellows and Visiting Scholars (Visiting Scholar, Visiting Undergraduate Student, Visiting Graduate Student), including management of subsequent immigration matters as appropriate.
Prepare offer letters and partner with faculty supervisors, Senior HR Representatives and the HR Transaction Team on the life cycle of employment, including ensuring timely renewal of term-limited and Research Fellow appointments.
Immigration Processes
Provide information to candidates about university immigration processes
Coordinate immigration paperwork processes between candidates and the International Center
Advise on and manage J1 visa processing for LSA faculty, staff and visitors in the J1 category and work with the International Center’s International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) group.
Advise on and manage the H1B, E2, TN or other visa processing categories for LSA faculty and staff and work with the International Center’s Faculty & Staff Immigration services.
Advise on and manage the PR visa processing for LSA Faculty and staff and work with the International Center’s Faculty & Staff Immigration services and approved retained counsel.
Advise and assist on matters related to billing of international health insurance in conjunction with the International Center’s Health Insurance Advisor.
Track Faculty, staff and visitors immigration status to ensure statuses remain active, make amendments or extensions as appropriate, and terminate in a timely manner.
Employee and Labor Relations (Collective Bargaining Agreement on LEO)
Assist supervisors and administrators with day-to-day implementation of LSA performance management practices (work planning, ongoing feedback to employees, performance appraisals)
Administer LEO and GEO union contracts by advising departments and investigating basic labor contract questions.
Assist supervisors with administering the university’s reduction-in-force process
Assist supervisors with management of time away programs, advising on leave of absence, furlough, reduction-in-force, FMLA, workers compensation issues, and questions related to the work connections process.
Compensation
Assist with the monitoring, investigation, and resolution of payroll, timekeeping and benefit issues
Communicate relevant compensation and payroll information to department personnel
Manage annual UM effort certification process for assigned departments
Visitors and Volunteers
Administer UM volunteer and visiting scholar guidelines, and managing the visiting scholar database.
Assist departments with registering programs and initiating background checks related to UM policy regarding Children on Campus.
Other Duties as Assigned
Provide data and analytics as requested
Participate in LSA events, meetings, and committees
Skills You Have
Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two or more years of progressively responsible experience in Human Resource management
Some practical knowledge of HR concepts.
Previous work experience with collective bargaining agreements.
High level of professionalism and an eagerness to learn
Ability to adapt communication to different audiences while using discretion
Exceptional customer service skills

Desired Qualifications*
Certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR, SHRM-CP).
Experience in an HR position supporting multiple units and managers
More than three years of progressively responsible experience in the area of Human Resources in an academic or research setting;
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Human Resources or another relevant field;
Experience assisting with immigration processing;
Knowledge of University and LSA policies, procedures, practices, and resources;
Experience working in HR information systems and with tools used for analyzing data, such as Excel.
Work Locations
LSA Human Resources is located at 555 South Forest. The work schedule will be negotiable and offers the ability to work remotely the majority of the week. You will need an on campus presence for meetings and other work related responsibilities. Customer support is throughout the Ann Arbor central campus.
Additional Information
The salary for this position will range from $50,000 to $58,800. A higher salary may be possible for well-qualified candidates.
