PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE
Founded in 2006, the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute (BMI) is an international literary arts center based within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. BMI brings writers and the literary imagination into the heart of public life through readings, conversations, and an annual festival; innovative media projects including Black Mountain Radio; residential fellowships; and student enrichment opportunities. BMI is home to the first ever City of Asylum program in the United States, which provides safe haven to writers who have been persecuted for their literary work, so that they may live and write freely without censorship, risk of imprisonment, or threats against their lives. BMI has served writers from Iran, Syria, China, Cuba, and Afghanistan through its City of Asylum program; fostered new books by providing writers, at all stages in their careers, with time and space to create while in residency; and hosted some of the world’s most innovative thinkers-in literature, politics, arts, and culture-through guest speaking engagements in Las Vegas. The question that guides all aspects of BMI’s work is: How can writers-and their honest, artful expression-galvanize community, support open societies, and facilitate creative approaches to the most vexing problems of our time? Black Mountain Institute strives to be a conduit between UNLV, public audiences throughout Southern Nevada, and literary arts communities around the world.
