The University of Notre Dame’s Industrial Design program seeks applicants for a Teaching Scholar position. The Teaching Scholar Associate position is modeled after a postdoctoral appointment and responsibilities include three primary areas: facilities management, undergraduate teaching, and advancing personal design scholarship or projects. This one-year position (9-month term) is renewable annually for up to three years. The Industrial Design program, located within the College of Arts and Letters, grants BA, BFA, and MFA degrees.
Duties of the selected applicant:
• Teach one undergraduate course/semester in Industrial Design
• Maintain and improve existing model shop facilities, including rapid prototyping equipment
• Foster a safe shop environment for all students, including shop safety training sessions
• Expose students to traditional model shop practice and its relation to 3D modeling techniques
• Direct and promote Notre Dame students’ involvement in design research through public display, participation in national competition, industry participation, publication or conference presentation
• Understand and promote design as a tool for social change and improving the human condition
• Retain active affiliation with the Industrial Designers Society of America
Requirements for the ideal job applicant:
• Holds a master’s degree (MFA, MDes, MS, etc.) in Industrial Design
• Commands a well-developed broad range of traditional designer proficiencies:
-Traditional pen and paper sketching techniques
-Digital tablet sketching (Sketchbook Pro on Wacom Cintiq)
-3D digital solid modeling (SolidWorks)
-Rendering of digital models (KeyShot)
-Experience with file preparation for rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC
routing)
-Familiarity with industrial materials and processes
-Traditional model shop skills to construct hand-built scale models
-Ability to execute and instruct high-quality 2D and 3D visual presentations
• Has documented past success teaching ID-related courses
• Understands and uses ethnographic, qualitative and quantitative research methods
• Demonstrates proven organizational, visual/verbal communication and presentation skills
