The Deputy Executive Director of the U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) is an energetic, dynamic and mission-focused executive charged with collaborating with the Executive Director on the overall operation of the USBG, including the formulation of policies, strategic direction and implementation of programs. The Deputy Executive Director helps maintain the USBG as a nationally and globally recognized horticultural, scientific and educational public garden and museum. The position is responsible for workforce leadership, operational oversight, supervision and coaching of employees to serve in stellar capacities as ambassadors of the USBG with colleagues and the visiting public and serves as the principal advisor to and strategic partner of the Executive Director.
Major Duties
Administrative Leadership
Supports the Executive Director in leading, supervising and directing the overall workforce involved with the operation and strategic vision of the United States Botanic Garden and manages organizational budget and workload to achieve the Garden’s goals and objectives.
Provides support for the preparation of the jurisdiction’s annual budget requests covering anticipated personnel, operational, facilities and capital project expenses.
Develops and maintains effective rapport and working relationships with people within and outside of the USBG/AOC including congressional members and staff; agencies in the executive, judicial and legislative branches; colleagues at museums and public gardens; higher education and research institution professionals; private sector leaders; and distinguished members of the public.
Provides expert advice and exchanges information and ideas with AOC colleagues, other government agencies and outside organizations regarding public garden and museum leadership, policies and operations; botany and/or horticulture; educational offerings; field of specialization; and customer service.
Contributes to outreach and educational programs to increase public awareness of the USBG and its leadership role in education, horticulture, conservation, sustainability and administration.
Program Management
Oversees and administers emerging and/or critical USBG programs and operations and serves on AOC committees as needed.
Works with the Executive Director to lead USBG strategic planning and contribute to AOC strategic planning. Collaboratively develops five-year strategic plans that includes vision, mission, goals and objectives for the Garden’s major functions and operations, including specific actions, timeframes and measures of success.
Oversees establishment and management of partnerships including those that help develop sustainable practices, horticulture and education excellence, horticultural and botanical research and resources and conservation.
Serves as the primary liaison for the Garden with U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) and the AOC Office of the Chief Security Officer (OCSO).
Supervisory And Managerial Responsibilities
Performs administrative and technical supervisory functions. Plans, schedules and assigns work and evaluates employees’ performance. Manages the organizational unit’s budget and workload. Develops guidelines and performance requirements for direct reports. Evaluates employee performance. Resolves complaints and grievances.

To be creditable, candidates must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service.

A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred.
