The Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Health Specialist Sr. (EHS, Sr.) to join a team of professionals committed to providing support of Public Health services. The position is based out of the Augusta County Health Department with occasional travel throughout the CSHD. The EHS, Sr. position performs a variety of duties including onsite sewage disposal system and private well evaluation, design, permitting, and inspection. The EHS, Sr. also conducts rabies investigations and abatement and responds to general environmental complaints and inquiries.
Applicants not meeting full knowledge and experience requirements may qualify for initial classification as an Environmental Health Specialist; must have or be able to complete training and obtain DPOR onsite soil evaluator (COSE or AOSE) licensure within 18 months of employment.
Minimum Qualifications
This position requires knowledge in the natural sciences, including environmental health, community health, biology, microbiology, epidemiology & physics. Must have knowledge of environmental law with a demonstrated ability to interpret & apply complex regulations relating to a variety of environmental health problems. Must have demonstrated ability to conduct investigations & inspections in assigned areas; communicate well both orally & in writing; analyze & solve problems; deal effectively with the public concerning inspections, investigations & a variety of health-related issues. A valid state driver’s license is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from college with a degree in public health, environmental health or a degree related to the duties of the position preferred or equivalent experience in environmental health, such as experience gained as an Environmental Health Associate. Computer software knowledge preferred. Prefer some experience in Public Health.
Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
In accordance with Executive Directive #18, as a condition of employment, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires all Executive Branch employees, including new hires, to disclose their vaccination status. If you are the selected candidate, proof of vaccination will be required during new employee orientation on your first day of work. Employees that are not vaccinated must be tested weekly.
