Ready to build? So are we. Come join VMware’s Tanzu Pinniped team.
VMware Tanzu Pinniped, a part of VMware’s Modern Application Platform Business Unit (MAPBU), aims to provide the missing authentication experience in Kubernetes. Our mission is to provide a set of tools that make granting access to the cluster straightforward, safe, and secure. Pinniped achieves this by providing a developer friendly authentication experience across a set of kubernetes clusters and a seamless setup and integration experience for platform operators who want to limit cluster access to users within their organization.
The team researches user needs and understands identity and security problems within both the Kubernetes ecosystem and the Tanzu portfolio. We collaborate with the Kubernetes community to build solutions which benefit anybody attempting to secure a Kubernetes cluster.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6 months you will work toward completing?
You have become familiar with the team’s technical domain and the authentication challenges facing a Kubernetes user
You are using your knowledge of our technical domain to advise and influence cross-team collaborations
Provide technical guidance as we solicit product feedback from the community. Ensure what we’re building meets the expectations of reliability, scaling, and security
You are actively engaged in helping the team maintain an iterative development process that prioritizes fast feedback loops, asking questions, and learning from mistakes.
You are immersed in the team’s day to day operations; are advising other engineers on how to advance technical work streams.
You have supported and guided the team in the creation of architecture/design artifacts and decisions
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
In this role, you become an expert within MAPBU on securing access to Kubernetes as well as authentication protocols like OAuth, OIDC, LDAP, & SAML.
You will:
Collaborate with your PM & manager to define solutions which solve authentication challenges facing the Kubernetes community
Collaborate with various Open Source Software communities (e.g. Kubernetes, Pinniped, etc).
You will bring innovative ideas to complex technical solutions and write code using Golang and declarative programming with Kubernetes Controllers/CRDs.
You will work with other functions including program management, quality and site reliability engineers to improve the product.
Mentor team members at different stages in their technical career.
Support the team in breaking down complex stories into development tasks. Conduct code reviews, facilitate technical context sharing discussions.
Collaborate with management, your team, and teams across the Tanzu Portfolio to achieve planned objectives
What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is Jeremy Morony, Engineering Manager for the Tanzu Run Identity & Auth Program. Jeremy is a technical leader with 20 years of programming, facilitation, coaching, and mentoring experience at both startups and larger companies. He has worked in MAPBU since December 2019.
The Tanzu Pinniped team is a distributed team with colleagues across all time zones in the United States, with the core leadership team residing in the bay area. The team has four members, a Product Manager and an Engineering Manager.
We believe sustainable pace and psychological safety foster creativity and a productive work environment. We care deeply about collaboration, both with the open source community and within our own teams. Teammates are always accessible to lend a helping hand both remotely and in-person.
You might like working with us if you:
Like working as a part of a balanced team, empowered to make its own decisions
Focus on customer outcomes rather than number of features delivered
Prioritize equitable treatment, inclusivity, and diversity both within your team and in the broader organization
The Tanzu Identity & Auth program is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are a learning organization and believe that diverse teams are stronger and more effective at solving the complex problems we make simple for our customers. Empathy, diverse points of view, approaches, and skill sets bring us to the best solution faster, together.
Due to the Biden Administration issuing an Executive Order (EO) that effectively mandates COVID-19 vaccination for all U.S. based employees of federal contractors and subcontractors, all U.S. based VMware employees will be required to have their final vaccination dose (e.g., second dose of Pfizer or Moderna, or single dose of J&J) by January 4, 2022. Specifically, this means that all U.S. based VMware employees will need to be fully vaccinated by January 18th, 2022, or by their first date of employment if after that date, subject to legally required accommodations.
