The College of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts invites applications for two new tenured or tenure track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor in Design. We are looking for two accomplished designers who seek to develop their own creative practice within a collaborative school of design and art, all within the context of a Research 1 university. Our faculty work deeply with undergraduate and graduate students in interaction design, graphic design and typography, illustration and design for social impact. There are many opportunities ahead to build new curricula and reshape some of what exists.
For these two positions, we are particularly interested in candidates who create user experiences via web, mobile, and emerging technologies, as well as those who engage graphic design and typography as a primary activity. Projects across these two areas could include websites, apps, games, wearables, brand systems, or book or publication designs. Candidates for these positions may identify themselves in one of these two areas, in both, or somewhere in-between. Creative practices might be organized in other ways as well—for example, around sustainability, identity, health, or biodiversity. We embrace many forms of research, including scholarly, collaborative, client-driven, or self-generated. Overall, we seek people who build critical inquiry and a strong sense of form and methodology into their studio practice. Teaching experience is preferred for these positions but not required.
Our new colleagues will conduct research, teach five courses per academic year, advise students, and provide service to the School, University, and profession. An MFA, MDes, or MS in design or a related field is required. Rank and salary for the position is commensurate with experience. The appointment begins August 2024. For fullest consideration, apply by January 15, 2024.
The Sam Fox School strives to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in our community. Communication Design embeds social impact, particularly in St. Louis, in many of its design courses and programs.
Communication Design at Washington University
These positions are part of the Sam Fox School’s Communication Design program. Our faculty are energetic, accomplished, and community-centric. We are a group of designers, illustrators, and historians who prioritize visual making; write in scholarly, critical, and expressive forms; design socially engaged processes; design human-computer interaction; and study the history and culture of design. Areas of particular expertise include user experience and interface design, typography, data visualization, socially-engaged design, brand identity, motion graphics, design research and image-making including children’s books and editorial illustration. We are moving further into areas such as extended reality, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things.
We currently offer BA and BFA degrees inside the Sam Fox School and have several majors and minors offered with campus partners. Undergraduate majors mix gateway courses like Typography, Interaction Foundations, and Word and Image with specialized electives and concluding capstones in order to construct their specialties and portfolios. Our undergraduate minor in Creative Practice for Social Change builds on a partnership with the Brown School of Social Work. Our minor in Human Computer Interaction, focused on UX/UI design, systems thinking, programming, and front-end development, is a partnership with the McKelvey School of Engineering, and is projected to grow into a major. We will soon launch a Masters of Design program focusing on the integration of technology and social impact in areas such as public health and community infrastructure. The University’s new School of Public Health will be a significant partner. Across all our programs, Communication Design faculty teach in team and individual settings, simultaneously reinforcing their research and seeding collaboration.
Communication design faculty draw on deep resources across the University to conduct their work including the Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book (with letterpress and risograph), University Library Special Collections, and the Dowd Illustration Research Archive (DIRA), that features illustration holdings, rare books, and print history collections. The School and University also provide forums and funding opportunities for faculty in a variety of collaborative formats.
The Sam Fox School strives to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in our community. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to nurture an inclusive learning and work environment and to promote a culture and ethos that values diversity, inclusion, and equitable success.
