Through the Race and Ethnicity Cluster Hire Initiative, Washington University in St. Louis aims to build a world-class research program on race. Two previous rounds of this cluster hire initiative took place in 2020-21 and 2021-22. The Office of the Provost funds this initiative.
We are seeking an assistant professor of design whose critically aware, socially-oriented creative practice and/or scholarship examines race and racism. This candidate should collaborate with other experts and industries, using design to advance equity and empowerment. Potential areas of expertise could include design research, graphic design, social design, product design, UI/UX, typography, editorial or book design, motion graphics, or data visualization. The successful candidate’s research will critically investigate implicit bias and its role in exacerbating inequalities. This candidate’s work should encourage contemporary design pedagogies that prioritize transparency, equity, and agency. In addition to their research, our new colleague will contribute to the undergraduate BFA curriculum in design and play an integral role in the growth of a new graduate program in Design Futures.
We are inviting applications for tenured/tenure-track faculty positions across a range of fields, with a focus on the study of race and ethnicity. Candidates must have a terminal degree in their field. Candidates must have an active and innovative research agenda focused on race and/or ethnicity and a commitment to excellent teaching.
