Under direct supervision, this classification performs semi-skilled and some skilled maintenance of the City wastewater and related structures.
Pursuant to the City/GCEA MOU, the City provides the following additional monetary incentives:

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspects and cleans City wastewater lines and storm drain facilities by removing manhole covers and using a variety of current industrial wastewater cleaning equipment. Locates, excavates, shores and repairs broken wastewater and storm drainpipes.
Operates, maintains and performs various technical repairs to Robotic Television inspection equipment.
Operates and maintains various lift station facilities throughout the City, cleans all wastewater and storm drainpipes, and removes any restrictions. Participates in the response to Sanitary Sewer overflows. May assist with placement of wastewater sample collection devices.
Keeps and maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed and specialized equipment used.
Maintains ongoing program dealing with eradication of cockroaches, rats, mosquitoes and other assorted vermin.
Assists in the implementation and enforcement of related environmental codes and policies.
Utilizes specialized wastewater confined space safety equipment including breathing devices, gas detectors and safety harnesses. Properly places traffic barricades, cones and delineators in traffic situations.
May act as Senior Wastewater Maintenance Worker in his/her absence.
May drive on City business as necessary.
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.
Methods, operation and policies related to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), State Water Resources Control Board Order (SWRCB) No. 2006-0003 – Statewide General Water Discharge Requirements for Sanitary Sewer Systems, and Standard Urban Storm Water Mitigation Plan (SUSMP) regulations.
Proper traffic control and delineation procedures.
Skill in:
Elementary level in reading wastewater and storm drain plans, blueprints and proofs.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively in English.
Complete necessary training and attain required certifications for the classification by the end of the probationary period and/or trainee program.
Deal directly with customer complaints and resolve issues proficiently.
Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period and/or trainee program.
Establish and maintain smooth and effective working relationships.
Foster a teamwork environment.

Experience
Must have completed either of the following:
One year as a City of Glendale Wastewater Maintenance Trainee and successful completion of the City of Glendale Wastewater Maintenance Trainee Program, including Certification of Completion of Volume I of the wastewater maintenance correspondence training courses from the Office of Water Programs with completion of Volume II of the Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems wastewater maintenance correspondence training course by the end of probation.
OR
Two years of experience in performing skilled or semiskilled wastewater maintenance work for a governmental organization, including operating various wastewater cleaning and maintenance equipment, and Certification of Completion of Volume I and II of Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems wastewater maintenance correspondence training courses.
Education/Training
Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Class B Driver’s License with necessary endorsements at the time of appointment.
A current DMV printout is required. Applicant must provide a copy of their DMV driving record at the time of application. Failure to provide this record will disqualify the candidate from participating in the selection process. Multiple moving violations or major traffic accidents, and/or license suspension(s) within the last three years prior to the date of application may be grounds for disqualification.
Candidates with a commercial driver’s license instruction permit will be allowed to participate in the selection process and proof of a valid Class B license with the necessary endorsements will be required prior to employment offer.

An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements.
All applications, resumes and submitted reference materials will be reviewed and only those candidates who have attached an official K-4 DMV driving record to their application and who meet the stated minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the selection process. The examination will consist of an evaluation – qualifying, a performance exam – pass/fail, and an oral interview worth 100%. Any evaluation will be based on the candidate’s education and experience as related to the position. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate’s education, experience, knowledge and skills for the position. Approximately the top 12 scoring candidates who achieve a minimum passing score of 70% or higher on the performance exam will advance to the oral exam. The selected candidate will be subjected to a background check including Livescan fingerprinting. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. The provisions of this bulletin do not constitute an express or implied contract.
