Engineer III, Transport Network Architecture
Windstream’s Transport Network Architecture team continues building upon award-winning innovation momentum in new, disaggregated, intelligent optical network technology and service innovations in the optical network domain. Windstream is seeking to expand the team with a Engineer III position in Transport Network Architecture. The desired candidate would have 3-5 years working in the development, engineering, testing, and/or deployment of optical technologies in a communication service provider regional and core network.
Build your experience in optical transport network engineering and operations to new levels and domains while working with the leading-edge technologies to grow and expand Windstream’s industry-leading optical networks within and beyond North America. Windstream seeks the Engineer III to lead the evolution of Windstream’s key existing and newly developing networks, enabling the newest technology capabilities and lowest cost profiles via upgrade and onboarding of new innovations.
The Engineer III role will lead Windstream’s optical transport network architecture and evolution, looking ahead towards next gen components and systems in varying realms of ROADM, amplifier, coherent transmission, and packet/optical transport nodes.

Location:
Position is remote office/WFH-compatible and travel-enabled. Ability to support company travel as required/available is essential to visit technology suppliers, attend/present at conferences, support hands-on initiatives, and access testbeds in the network lab in Little Rock, AR and supplier facilities.
Tasks:
Develop requirements for new optical network solutions. Analyze requirements to meet growth and evolution in Transport domain platforms and products. Assess bill of materials and cost model network solutions. Candidate must anticipate and understand optical technology and review its application to the Windstream network. Recommend new hardware and software for testing and deployment. Write test plans, execute tests, install and remove hardware and connectivity in the lab. Write scripts and develop tools to automate test cases. Cost model new network systems and technologies in comparison to each other and to existing network designs. Perform hands-on testing with network test equipment in a field trial and lab environment. Provide documentation and handoff of tested and approved transport hardware to downstream Engineering and Operations teams. Support deployment through development of new documentation and quality assurance through network First Office Application. Position is responsible for day-to-day work priority and progress against team and corporate goals.
Minimum Requirements:
In depth understanding of telecommunications industry; in depth knowledge of one or more engineering disciplines and vendor equipment including Transport, Ethernet, IPoDWDM, network management, and test equipment operations. Ability to build economic cost models for network projects, network architectures, and new technology platforms. In depth knowledge of accepted communications service provider engineering practices. Computer software knowledge to include Microsoft Office, Custom Planning Tools, Databases, computer and network operating systems and EMS applications. Good analytical skills; the ability to prioritize projects; great oral and written communication skills; and great interpersonal skills. Good project management skills required to balance timelines and priorities of network, lab, and analysis projects. Position is responsible for day-to-day work priority and progress against corporate goals.
Education and Experience:
College degree and 3-5 years’ experience or 7 years in a combination of education and related Engineering/Technical experience required.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to stay ahead of the economic and technological developments in the communications service provider industry and the pace of change in optical networking technologies.
