Writopia Lab is an award-winning 501(C)(3) nonprofit that runs creative writing workshops for kids and teens ages 5 to 18. Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for writers at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school.
Writopia is hiring for an HR Manager who will support a work force of approximately 25 full time and between 40 and 80 part time staff members in multiple jurisdictions. The role will be responsible for overseeing daily HR operations, partnering closely with directors and managers to provide support and guidance, and identifying and building robust HR functions. We are looking for an HR professional who is highly collaborative and interested in further defining the HR function at Writopia.
Impact
Writopia Lab works with thousands of young writers every year — in our Labs, in Title-1 public schools, and in partnership with community based organizations around the country, as well as online. As a member of the operations team, your work will have a direct impact on how we do our work. You will support coworkers and managers who are directly involved in how our kids and teens experience the joy, literacy, and critical thinking that are core to our mission.
Who You Are
You are an HR professional who is resourceful and motivated to continually improve an organization and help people grow professionally. You are service oriented, understanding that HR is uniquely positioned to further the goals of an organization through developing relationships, engaging and cooperating with people, and demonstrating knowledge. You’ve developed good judgement regarding complex issues around employment relationships and you are able to see and understand these issues from multiple perspectives. You prefer a start up, mission-driven work culture environment to a corporate one.

If you have children of your own they may attend Writopia Lab workshops free of charge during the period of your employment, so long as the workshop has at least three paying students and is not so crowded as to require an extra staff member.
