Position Summary YWCA Central Alabama is seeking to hire a full-time licensed Staff Attorney with an understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and trauma to provide consultation and representation to survivors of domestic violence. The Staff Attorney will provide consultation and representation to victims of domestic violence and maintain the development and management of legal grant proposals and program initiatives. Essential Functions

• Provide comprehensive legal intake, consultation, representation and referrals to victims of domestic violence.
• Provide representation in family law and civil protection order cases.
• Participate in intake and case assessment meetings and make legal referrals as indicated.
• Conduct outreach and training to bring awareness to domestic violence services.
• Maintain records according to YWCA Central Alabama/Domestic Violence Services policies.

Knowledge and Skills

• Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to domestic violence.
• Ability to comprehend and analyze legal information and to explain it in an understandable way to clients.
• Experience working with vulnerable, marginalized and/or underserved populations.
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Good organization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent decision-making skills.
• Intermediate to advanced computer skills (Microsoft OfficeWord, Excel, Outlook).
• Must be an advocate for the mission, values and goals of the YWCA Central Alabama.

Educational and Work Experience Requirements

• Law degree from an accredited law school.
• Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Alabama.
• Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
• Three to five years experience in a public interest setting.
• Computer skills in word processing and a willingness to adapt to new software as may be needed.
• Use of personal automobile with a valid drivers license and personal automobile insurance.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

• This position is located in Downtown Birmingham. This job operates in a court room and office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
• This role requires the physical mobility to sit and walk for moderate periods of time and requires the ability to occasionally carry or lift objects weighing up to 20 lbs.
• This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• This position will be expected have access to own transportation to travel throughout the 3 county service areas (Blount, St. Clair, and Jefferson) to attend hearings and court proceedings.
