Duties
Summary
This position serves in the Emergency Department (ED) Nursing Service Line at the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System (CAVHS) located in Little Rock, AR. The Health Technician is responsible for expediting the care and treatment of patients and ensuring implementation of all requested diagnostic exams and performing routine and complex patient care duties.
Responsibilities
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Interprets requests or instruction for medical or health care personnel.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, and treatment of common practices and techniques.
- Receives and responds to several unclear inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical, personal, and administrative matters.
- Secures patients’ confidence and cooperation.
- Positions patients for procedures.
- Performs personal patient care.
- Teaches patients proper health care practices.
- Performs diagnostic tests and procedures.
- Maintains patient records.
- Maintains control records and documents test results.
- Receives and Interprets requests for procedures.
- Sets up equipment, determines necessary technical factors and sets controls.
- Operates equipment and assists medical staff with diagnostic procedures.
- Handles clerical and administrative support and coordination requirements.
- Performs health care procedures.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Various schedule with rotating weekends. Subject to change based on the needs of the Agency.

Physical Requirements: This is a mentally and physically demanding position. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking; Work with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and similar activities; Uses principles of body mechanics and obtains assistance when needed; Uses protective measures and techniques in managing disturbed behavior; This position also requires patient lifting and positioning patients for podiatry treatment.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: immediate recognition of medical emergencies including obviously ill/injured patients; perform phlebotomy and/or peripheral IV insertions; operate or have knowledge of medical equipment such as scales, ceiling and portable lifting devices, portable suctions, and defiberators; and obtain, report and document vital signs.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Have you successfully completed Graduate education or an internship that meets the specialized experience? (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
