This is the entry level in the PERS-Account Specialist Series. The work involves a variety of professional and technical activities in the administration of benefits of active or retired members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). The incumbent assists in reconciling, posting, and refunding retirement contributions. Assistance and information is provided to individual members, groups, and to PERS member-agencies regarding benefits of plans administered by PERS. Incumbents in this classification are expected to assist in closure of an active member account to a retirement status, both for service and disability retirement. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative superior.
Examples of Work: Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:
Prepares accurate Estimates of Benefits, distribution calculations, and payout options and explains payout options for clients and members.
Assists members and agency personnel in person and via telephone in completing and filing claims for service, disability, and survivor benefits.
Assists and counsels clients and members regarding service and disability retirement planning.
Provides information in person and by telephone regarding specific statutory provisions, rules, and regulations governing benefits that are available to members and beneficiaries under various retirement plans and payment options.
Assists PERS members through workshops and seminars with retirement education concerning all retirement plans administered by the Public Employees’ Retirement System.
Audits and reconciles members’ wages, contributions, and service credit reported for all periods of employment.
Obtains guardianship papers, conservatorship papers, and other pertinent legal documents to authorize payment in accordance with state laws.
Calculates, balances, and reconciles employee and employer contributions and undistributed contributions for all plans administered by the Public Employees’ Retirement System.
Verifies acceptability of a variety of legal documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, legal affidavits, divorce decrees, community property settlements, and specific consent decrees.
Computes and authorizes payments such as adjusting, reducing, transferring, and temporarily withholding or cancelling benefits as required by changes in eligibility status of retirees, children, beneficiaries, or a surviving spouse.
Responds to correspondence and processes insurance premiums, direct deposits, monthly checks, tax deductions, notifications of death, address changes, and no-receipt of monthly benefits.

Any request to substitute related education or experience for minimum qualifications must be addressed to the Mississippi State Personnel Board in writing, identifying the related education and experience which demonstrates the candidate’s ability to perform all essential functions of the position.

Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
