The Crisis Response Team is a collaborative and supportive team the provides crisis services to individuals facing mental health crises 24 hours/day, 7days/week. Current team members state they enjoy crisis work because they can offer immediate solutions to individuals seeking support with their mental health needs. As a Behavioral Health Counselor, (Mental Health Practitioner) you will receive clinical supervision and always have support from a Mental Health Professional when meeting with clients. Three 12-hour night shifts will be scheduled each week, from 7pm – 7 am, with four hours each week for documentation, meetings, trainings.

Job Summary
The Behavioral Health Counselor requires a broad, yet solid, understanding of human behavior and theories of counseling. May work with a wide range of patient populations and presenting issues, requiring a foundation in a variety of treatment modalities. This role is a team-based role where responsibility for patient well-being is diffused among the treatment team and the overall responsibility lies with a clinical supervisor or admitting provider. The Behavioral Health Counselor assesses patient needs, may diagnose disorders, develops treatment plans, and implements treatment interventions specific to patient needs. Continually assesses patient’s progress and revises treatment plans and interventions accordingly. Documents treatment sessions. Provides patient progress updates to interdisciplinary team, as needed. May educate patient support members about patient issues and interventions. May refer for additional clinical services or to specialists, as needed. Must stay current on emerging issues in the profession. The Behavioral Health Counselor may work in a variety of settings, with duties varying by setting:
In a clinic setting (other than primary care), the Behavioral Health Counselor conducts scheduled face-to-face counseling sessions designed to assess and improve patient’s emotional, mental, and behavioral health.
In a hospital setting, the Behavioral Health Counselor may have a broad scope of duties, depending upon assignment. Hospital assignments include psychiatric inpatient treatment and/or specific hospital units. Depending on location, may place patients on mental health and substance-related holds. Psychiatric inpatient treatment duties include development, implementation, and evaluation of therapy programs, individual and family counseling, and consultative services to attending psychiatrist. Hospital unit duties include crisis intervention, assessment, and referral.
In a community setting, the Behavioral Health Counselor coordinates and provides treatment for patients with severe and persistent mental illness. This may include community-based interventions aimed at improving daily living skills, social skills, and self-regulation skills. The community-based Behavioral Health Counselor consults with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure treatment compliance.
In a residential setting, the Behavioral Health Counselor coordinates and provides treatment for patients requiring a higher level of care than outpatient therapy; however, do not meet the criteria for psychiatric inpatient treatment. Treatment occurs at the residential treatment facility and includes a broad range of duties: assessment and diagnosis, individual and group therapy, development, implementation, and evaluation of therapy programs, and consultation and coordination with a multi-disciplinary team.
Qualifications
In Minnesota, must follow Minnesota State statute defining Mental Health Practitioner. In all other areas, Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related Behavioral Health Sciences required; graduation from an accredited school preferred. License must be in good standing in state(s) of practice. In Minnesota, may have one of the following:
In some states, will consider candidates seeking licensure by reciprocity in instances where obtaining licensure in the state of practice can be accomplished within 90 days of hire. This will require the candidate to review and compare their current state issued license to practice with regulations for the practice of clinical social work/professional counseling in the state of practice and ensure that timely acquisition of licensure is possible based on comparisons of statutes, educational, and clinical requirements. Exceptionally qualified new graduates in the process of obtaining license appropriate to education will be considered with evidence demonstrating experience and exposure to behavioral health. Non-licensed candidates must provide documentation that they are in the process of obtaining appropriate license.
Required to possess a valid class D driver’s license and auto insurance. If class D driver’s license is required, must maintain a good driving record and have access to personal vehicle and willingness to use the vehicle in carrying out position responsibilities.
