About the Indiana Department of Natural Resources:
The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana’s citizens through professional leadership, management, and education. This position will be with the Classified Forest & Wildlands Program.
Salary Information:
This role traditionally starts at a base salary of $38,792; however, pay may be commensurate with experience.
About the Job:
As the Forester, you will serve as an administrator of a multi-county district in the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and provide forestry management assistance and technical guidance to owners of private forest land and timber operators.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Develop tree management plans including timber harvesting, timber marketing, tree planting, forest inventory, and forest protection.
Collect technical forest resource data for state and federal programs.
Estimate current and potential woodland growth rates.
Establish and maintain public relations with landowners, communities, organizations, wood-using industries, and the public by providing forestry expertise.
Provide consulting services to federal, regional, county, and community planning efforts.
Write reports on work efforts and record pertinent data.
Research new and existing resource information.
Administer federal incentive grants for forest and tree management practices.

What You’ll Need for Success:
Specialized knowledge of forestry and forest management.
Specialized knowledge of forest management, current changes and innovations.
Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license.
Ability to manage and prescribe treatment for forest lands and urban trees.
Ability to perform various forestry techniques and principals such as measuring forest land and growth rates.
Basic knowledge of land surveying.
Ability to maintain cooperative work relationships with the pubic and other governmental units.
Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
