Job Description: Pharmacology Research Associate
WHO WE ARE: Artizan Biosciences, Inc. creates innovative microbiota-targeted therapies to restore lives disrupted by inflammatory disease. Leveraging our proprietary IgA-SEQ™ technology platform, Artizan identifies and distinguishes bacteria in the gut that predispose people to disease, with the goal of developing new and potentially curative treatments. This unique approach is applicable to a variety of microbiota-driven diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), central nervous system disorders, obesity, metabolic syndrome and autoimmune disease.
ABOUT THE POSITION: We are seeking a full-time Research Associate to conduct experiments into mechanisms by which microorganisms of interest promote inflammatory or neurological diseases using relevant rodent models. The position entails working with a small and dedicated group of experts in the fields of immunology and microbiome studies to conduct basic research as well as drug discovery and development studies. The successful candidate will have relevant educational and practical experience in in vivo pharmacology and will actively participate in the laboratory’s important research. This role requires versatility within the laboratory setting, a high level of self-motivation, responsibility, and an ability to quickly gain new skills. Over time, the candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform pre-clinical mouse studies in specific pathogen free and gnotobiotic sterility settings
- Facilitate murine studies by stocking and supplying required equipment and reagents
- Support immune phenotyping of animal tissues using immunology techniques including ELISA
- Use sterile technique to culture and characterize bacterial species of interest
- As needed perform biochemistry and molecular biology experiments with guidance from senior scientists
- Conduct laboratory work including documentation according to SOPs
- Demonstrate consistent compliance with laboratory safety policies
- Troubleshoot and complete routine procedures independently and efficiently
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Competence in basic in vivo procedures with rodents such as handling (basic restraint, husbandry), compound administration (gavage, s.c. and i.p. injection), necropsy and dissection
- Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures including pipetting and reagent preparation
- Excellent research record-keeping practices
- Flexibility to learn and adapt to new procedures
- Ability to operate standard laboratory instruments and scientific equipment
- High motivation and responsibility
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree, or bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience in a relevant setting
- Excellent organizational skills
- Positive attitude and a desire to contribute to a collaborative team culture
