Automobile Service Manager
Summary
An automobile service manager is responsible for directing and coordinating all activities involved in the acquisition, operations and maintenance of automotive equipments.
Duties
An automotive service manager coordinates activities of auto personnel, conducts research and testing procedures on effective auto equipment maintenance, and ensures the customer’s vehicle complies with environmental laws and government regulations. Automobile service managers also evaluate cost of maintenance; review and submit proposals of modifications to manufacturer or vendor, as well as obtain all types of automotive equipment such as supplies, materials, and parts needed to maintain and repair automobile. They also keep the equipment, garage and storage facilities clean and maintained, prevent operational delays in repairing equipment; interview, hire and train employees; assign, plan and direct work schedule of staff; and assure that the service personnel works in accordance to organization’s policies and other applicable laws. Automobile service managers also address complaints and resolve problems raised by customers; as well as assure clients of maximum efficiency and productivity in repair and maintenance services offered.
Education and Training Requirements
An automobile service manager must have a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent certificate. He must have at least two years of experience in the automotive industry and experience in a managerial position. Employers will prefer a combination of education and experience for aspiring automobile service managers. Certification may be attained as well.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
Managers who work in the automotive servicing business must possess mathematical, computer and reasoning skills. He must have good communication skills as well. Most importantly, he must be familiar with the parts and procedures on how automobiles run. He should be able to analyze and come up with solutions when repairing and maintaining vehicles. He should have excellent managerial and supervisory skills to handle the entire auto service staff.
Working Conditions
Working conditions of an automobile service manager include heavy lifting and performing tasks that may require uncomfortable positions. Although, he is employed in a managerial position, he may sometimes need to fix and maintain automobiles when necessary. He typically works the standard 40 hour a week schedule and overtime may be required to meet deadlines. The noise level may get moderately loud and the tasks involved in the job may include working with grease and dirt.
