The Manager of Zero Waste Operations is responsible for managing key aspects of San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC) recycling social enterprise which involves job training, operational management and achievement of environmental goals. The Manager is also responsible for the development and implementation of projects through government grants and customer contracts, while professionally managing key aspects of a comprehensive recycling program and job training program. This role also involves overseeing the procurement, maintenance, and general care of SJCC fleet, equipment, and facilities.
Zero Waste Operations
Assists with managing the overall operations of the zero waste social enterprise to achieve the triple bottom line (financial, social, and environmental) goals;
Oversees the successful implementation of the daily operations schedule;
Assures a high level of professionalism and customer service;
Coordinates billing and contracts with the Accounting and Finance Department;
Utilizes the Recycle iQ (SJCC’s proprietary recycling/zero waste business intelligence system) to track operations, customer relationship management and financial performance.

Fleet & Equipment Management
Ensures appropriate compliance and adherence to Motor Carrier Program requirements;
Tracks all Zero Waste vehicles;
Ensures all inspections are conducted daily;
Oversees all ordering of equipment and work conducted on vehicles.

Permitting & Data Management
Prepares and submits all required permitting applications and reports;
Ensures compliance with all state and local health, safety, work and facilities requirements;
Assists with CalRecycle annual grant management, including grant proposal submissions, record
keeping, and reporting;
Develops and maintains relationships with state and local government agencies, recycling
organizations and community agencies;
Checks data input systems daily to ensure all Zero Waste team members are utilizing systems appropriately;

Partnerships & External Relations
Conducts site visits when working with external partners;
Communicates & oversees all projects with internal & external partners;
Serves as an effective ambassador, builds connections, and maintains relationships with outside constituents.

Leadership & Mentorship
Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day engagement of corpsmembers in project work;
Implement skills training and facilitate intentional discussions and informal lessons to contribute to the corpsmembers’ personal growth and group dynamics;
Promote individual corpsmember development and a healthy, supportive community;
Follow and enforce all SJCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent the San Jose Conservation Corps.

General Project Management & Implementation
Delegate project work to SJCC staff
Train and motivate a crew of young adults to complete recycling projects safely and efficiently on SJCC campuses and at partner locations;
Delegate project work to SJCC corpsmember;
Think critically to resolve issues and solve problems;
Communicate effectively and coordinate logistics with project partners, corpsmembers, and SJCC staff.

Safety & Risk Management
Monitor and support the staff’s physical and emotional safety during work hours while implementing any work project;
Monitor and support the corpsmembers’ physical and emotional safety during work hours while implementing any work project;
Handle and correct any safety concerns as needed;
Ensure corpsmembers are wearing proper uniforms and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety;
Transport corpsmembers and equipment safely in SJCC vans or large vehicles;
Follow SJCC COVID-19 Mitigation protocol and ensure corpsmembers do the same;
Conduct daily inspections, cleanouts, and maintenance of vehicles;
Regularly review the Corpsmember Handbook and maintain familiarity with all policies;
Administration, Project Management, and Team Communication
Ensure that SJCC staff are completing reports in a timely matter;
Participate in biweekly Zero Waste unit meetings and other convenings as requested, coming prepared to report on key updates and personal progress;
Complete attendance tracking, daily and weekly reports, corpsmember evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc., and submit in a timely and highly detailed manner;
Track all project-related outcomes and deliverables, such as collection weights and quantities;
Use Recycle iQ and Corps iQ to track team progress and key project data;
Check in daily and provide responses to End of Day Reports daily on Slack;
Contribute to an organized and high-performing workplace.

Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from four-year college or university, or equivalent work experience;
Three years related experience and /or training in recycling/zero waste management programs;
Three years of program management experience involving training young adults (preferred);
Knowledge of recycling policies, laws and requirements;
California Class C Drivers License and clean driving record;
Public and/or private grant management experience;
Business and/or contract development experience;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
