Senior Cashier positions assign, direct, and supervise the work of subordinate cashiers; review transactions for accuracy; verify, reconcile, and balance the total daily transactions of each cashier; receive daily cash reports and deposit slips from revenue producing departments within the City; prepare daily bank deposits; maintain accurate reports of various accounts; maintain control of vault and other funds; prepare written reports and correspondence; process returned checks; and train and evaluate the work performance of subordinates; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTE:
Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: One year of full-time cashier experience with a municipal organization, public agency, non-profit organization, utility company (e.g., phone, cable/internet, gas, electric, water/wastewater, and refuse/recyclable/greenery collection), bank, savings and loan, or credit union, which must include ALL of the following:
Receiving cash, checks, and other negotiable instruments from the public and issuing receipts.
Calculating and making correct change.
Balancing monies against register tapes and various source documents using a 10-key adding machine by touch.
NOTES:
Balancing receipts against register tapes only is NOT qualifying.
Cashier experience in retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, check cashing outlets, or similar non-bank facilities is NOT qualifying.
City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIREABLE:
Familiarity with banking adjustments, transactions, and procedures including validating and encoding checks using an encoder-endorser machine and experience in detecting counterfeit bills.
Customer service experience in resolving complaints regarding bills/invoices.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; confirmation of full COVID-19 vaccination; and fingerprinting.
