UW Facilities manages the Universitys buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.
Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, this position will perform journeyman level construction work in one or more trade disciplines. Work involves assisting in multi trade shop work to back up trades staffing as well as focusing on a specific shop trade where the position is assigned. The role requires a good working knowledge of multiple related skill fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, sheet metal and/or sign shop. The position works at the direction of a specific shop lead and is tasked by that lead to assist with other trades as needed.
Must be able to perform alterations/construction work with an understanding of code compliance, ADA requirements, and safely operate equipment and use trade specific tools. This position operates as a general construction type position, able to assist trade specific journeymen or perform basic construction and alterations tasks in a semi-skilled capacity.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
May assist, coordinate and/or work with other trades and journey level personnel.
Assist plumbers:
Water line and sewer repair
Weld HDPE pipe for water line replacement
Jet/snake storm drainage systems
Rain Leader repair/replace
Install catch basin and multiple storm drain systems
Water line/irrigation locates
Lift station maintenance/ repair
Meter reading
Vactor truck catch basin cleaning
Assist heavy equipment operators:
Tooth watch for excavations/trenching for utility repair/installations
Installing trench box and/or shoring
Setting grades with grade stakes and laser transit
Paving asphalt repair for roads and pathways
Hand dig to expose utilities
Rigging and ground person for crane lifts and pics
Load / unload trucks/trailers
Greasing/fueling equipment
Operate an assortment of tools/equipment such as plate packer, jumping jack, vibe roller, versa handler and forklifts.
Operate various man lifts such as JLG, Gene, Teco, scissor lift and any other articulating lift.
Assist Machinery Master Mechanic:
Equipment maintenance on street sweeper, man lifts, backhoe, excavator, grader, roller, dump trucks/trailers etc.
Assist Street Painters:
Parking lot layout
Stencils
Street/parking lot cleaning and prep for painting
Loading/hauling street painting equipment
Flagging/Traffic control
Maintenance Mechanic 2 independent duties:
Install and Repair: Signs, signpost, bollard insert/sleeves, fixed in ground and surface mount bollards, banners, park/memorial teak benches, building id frames and signs, helipad windsock and wall anchors.
Operate various power tools in a skilled manner
Pick up and dispose of discarded pieces of furniture from student housing
Fill potholes in street and pathways
Install and /or move bike racks/bike lockers
Repair trip hazards on sidewalks and pathways
Operate various pieces of equipment in a safe and skilled manner
Clean small bio waste homeless encampment areas work that includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing, trash collection, leaf blowing and graffiti removal.
Use power equipment and hand tools required for cleaning
Use University approved industrial cleaners to remove graffiti or infectious waste products.
Snow removal equipment, Sanders, Ice melt application and power brooms to clear pathway/sidewalks.
Operate vehicles such as UW trucks and vans to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
May instruct semi-skilled workers. Communicate and coordinate with other UW facilities shop to facilitate work.
Know and comply with occupation health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (DS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Comply with All UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction (M&C).
Accountability Protocols (IAP). Support all management directives and the vision and values of UW Facilities – Maintenance & Construction (M&C).
Participate in and follow through with UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction (M&C) Lean principles into internal work processes and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.

Requirements include:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker,
OR full-journey status in a union;
OR four years’ applicable work experience.
Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products

Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Possession of a valid Washington State drivers license.
