General Definition
Announced in anticipation of administrative board approval.
This is supervisory water safety instructional and recreational work. Employees in this class supervise a staff of lower level instructors and lifeguards engaged in teaching safe swimming and other water recreational activities to a variety of pool users, including the physically and mentally handicapped. Work requires participating with others in the implementation of aquatic activities at a municipal pool. Work is distinguished from the lower level in this series by the participation in program development, course content, and supervision. Working conditions involve some disagreeable aspects and light physical effort. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Training, Education & Experience
The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Candidates must meet requirements within 30 days after the last date for filing applications.
1. CIVIL SERVICE STATUS:
Presently employed by the City of Philadelphia with permanent Civil Service status in the Department of Parks and Recreation with a performance rating of Satisfactory or higher.
AND
2. EDUCATION
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
3. EXPERIENCE
Three seasons of lifeguard experience which has involved responsibility for instructing others in the art of swimming.
Physical & Medical Requirements
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Required Licenses & Certifications
Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate, a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor’s Certificate, and a current certification required for lifeguarding including First Aid and CPR, at the time of application and during tenure of employment as a Water Safety Instructor 2.
