Academic Professional: Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist

The School of Design at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for the academic professional position of Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist.
The duties of the Senior Instructional Laboratory Specialist entail activities in the Print Lab and extended support. This position is responsible for managing all laboratory activities and printing services: set-up, support, maintenance, and assisting in the development of policies and procedures. Relied upon as University representative for all correspondence related to the lab and equipment.
Engagement
_ Supervises and consults with students, faculty, and staff in the use of lab materials and equipment.
_Works closely with CADA faculty and administration to efficiently schedule lab access and authorization workshops.
_Assesses student and faculty needs while providing services and demonstrations for lab equipment and general use.
_ Works in coordination with others to schedule demonstrations and provide support for projects utilizing the lab.
_Organizes and provides training for School of Design students.
_Hosts workshops and/or demonstrations on how to use lab equipment for students and faculty.
Operations
_Updates rules and regulations of the lab based on professor/course requirements.
_Hires, trains, supervises Student Lab Fellows and Student Assistant Workers. Reviews applications, interviews applicants, processes paperwork, provides scheduling, and submits hours worked.
_Trains and works with student employees in delivery of shop services and material preparation for class needs by request of faculty.
_Administers general first aid, calls in medical professionals when needed, and fills out Injury Reports
_Takes inventory and purchases all consumables and materials. Receives deliveries.
_Oversees the physical maintenance of tools, equipment, and associated resources to provide a safe working environment.
_Implements and organizes safety demonstrations.
Facilities
_Keeps current of print trends and technologies. Consults with other Lab Specialists, Associate Directors, and Facilities Committee on equipment and tool upgrades and needs.
_Maintains a clean facility, clear of debris and obstructions.
_Advises and assists in the development and execution of capital improvement projects involving the labs and instructional facilities.
_Submits work orders for lab facility needs.
_Works with Lab Specialists and school leadership on preparation for events and special projects within CADA.
_Assists with general preparation and maintenance of the building, classrooms, and studios.
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area (master’s degree preferred), and five years of experience in an architecture, design or arts laboratory setting, or general printing practice with bookbinding experience. Ideal candidates will have additional knowledge of various programming tools or languages for innovative production.
Salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications. Finalists will be asked to participate in interviews, which will take place in October. Earliest anticipated start date of the appointment begins in late November 2023.
