Digital Literacy Teachers are responsible for creating a supportive, empowering, learning environment for adult learners and delivering quality content area instruction in computer skills on all levels.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction and Support for Adult Learners
- Teach a course load of at least 3 classes per week of technology to adult basic education students.
- Develop lesson plans and curricula that are responsive to the student’s needs, improve digital literacy, and prepare adults for successful completion of IC3, MOS, and other technology certifications.
- Provide ongoing assessment of individual student progress and adapt curriculum and lesson plans according to the needs of the students.
- Coordinate lesson plans with other teachers to maximize collaboration and student learning.
- Communicate and direct volunteer instructional staff serving as co-teachers or teaching assistants in your classes and to those providing one-on-one or small group tutoring to your students.
- Coordinate with Student Support to ensure adult learners get both the academic and social services they need to be successful in school and their transition to college or career.
- Participate in regular meetings with Student Support for this purpose.
- Provide office hours regularly and/or as needed to support individual learner progress.
Program Administration and Data Collection
- Participate in site- and school-wide activities such as testing, field trips, or other supplemental assignments.
- Provide accurate and timely collection and entry of student attendance, class progress, and disciplinary actions when needed.
Professional Development
- Attend professional development training in content areas, instructional strategies, and adult education.
- Attend faculty and other staff meetings.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have the content knowledge to support instruction in:
Beginning Computers: Learners are introduced to the computer, keyboarding, Windows, Word, and the Internet, including skills needed to be successful on the GED and NEDP.
IC3: Learners are prepared to pass certifying exams in computing fundamentals, key MS Office applications, and online fundamentals.
MOS: Learners are prepared to pass certifying exams for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Specialists
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and adult education or secondary teaching experience are required, as well as relevant computer certifications or demonstrated ability to earn them before the start of classes.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and have experience teaching computer classes to adults in a basic education setting.
- MOS, IC3, or higher computer certification or major in computer science field a plus.
- Experience teaching Reasoning through Language Arts for the GED and/or high school English, preferably including experience implementing the College and Career Readiness standards for adults.
- Demonstrated ability and experience to engage the interest of adult learners and work with diverse adult learners, including those with special needs.
- Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners and respect for learner confidentiality.
- Familiarity with CASAS, GED, NEDP, and college placement exams is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with volunteers and consultants is a plus.
- Strong cultural competency skills, including the excellent ability to communicate with a diverse population.
