NOTE: Qualified applicants will be required to take an online exam. Performs heavy, arduous manual and semi-skilled work in the resurfacing of streets and roads; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of the Asphalt Paving Worker I in that the Asphalt Paving Worker II performs asphalt paving work in support of large-scale, high intensity road resurfacing projects which involves a more comprehensive knowledge of asphalt work, greater skill, ability and proficiency in keeping up with accelerated work pace, and greater physical effort requirement; whereas the Asphalt Paving Worker I performs asphalt paving work related to general road resurfacing, repair and maintenance activities.
- Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
- Performs a variety of heavy, arduous manual and semi-skilled work in resurfacing streets and roadways.
- Assists in the placement of asphalt paving, patching, preparation of road surfaces, and slurry seal application.
- Leads and participates in spreading and leveling of dirt, gravel, rock, or other materials by hand on road repair and construction projects.
- Operates secondary hydraulically powered and manual attachments on paving equipment for the placement of asphalt products for pavement preservation activities.
- Spreads oil on roadway to obtain bond between existing pavement and newly placed asphaltic concrete.
- Distributes asphaltic concrete evenly over road surface by raking and brushing material to correct thickness and adding or removing material to fill in low spots or to reduce high spots.
- Uses longhandled smoothing iron over asphalt road surfaces to smooth edges of asphalt mat to knead down high spots to remove porous or honeycombed surfaces.
- Manually smooths finish to proper thickness by carefully spreading or raking asphaltic concrete in areas inaccessible to paving equipment such as corners or shoulder areas and where there are voids in the pavement.
- Operates adjustor on paving equipment to attain proper flow and thickness of asphaltic concrete.
- Operates jackhammer in breaking pavement and sidewalks.
- Digs and prepares road base.
- Build berm, swales and asphaltic concrete foot paths.
- Performs rough masonry and carpentry work as required.
- May occasionally drive a light truck and other motorized equipment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the semi-skilled tasks and duties of this position.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license (equivalent to State of Hawaii, Type 3).
Knowledge of: practices, tools and materials used in asphalt work; the methods and techniques of preparing subsurfaces prior to laying asphalt and applying and leveling asphaltic concrete to desired thickness; and occupational hazard and safety precautions.
Ability to: perform heavy manual labor; learn and perform a variety of semi-skilled work tasks; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with common hand tools; follow safety practices; operate simple machinery and equipment; plan and lay out paving patterns; apply the techniques appropriate to asphalt paving work; demonstrate proper work methods and procedures; and exert considerable physical effort in keeping up with accelerated work pace.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
