Founded in 1859 as a school for young women, Averett grew to become a fully accredited, co-educational, four-year college that today
enrolls more than 1500 students from 26 states and 24 countries. It offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, minors and special programs
and three master’s programs. Both traditional and adult students make up a diverse student body, including a large international enrollment.
With its historic main campus in Danville, VA, the university also has six other campuses and learning centers throughout Virginia, as well
as online courses and degree programs to serve our Graduate and Professional Studies students. Averett’s network of more than 25,000 alumni
spans all 50 states and almost 50 countries.
The Director of Student Success is an active member of the Student Life staff and
assists in the management and promotion of the mission and vision of Averett University.
Under the direction of the Vice President of
Student Engagement/Senior Experience Officer the Director provides vision and leadership for student success and support initiatives to
increase retention and graduation rates for traditional students at the University, as well as lead the Student Success team. The Galesi
Student Success Center provides tutoring, early alert, ADA support, writing center, math and language labs, advising support, attendance and
grade tracking, and other key services to support our students.
The Director functions as a strong collegial team player able to
collaborate with the Registrar, Student Life, Faculty, Academics, Admissions, Athletics, Financial Aid and various University partners. The
Director is expected to develop data-informed retention plans to support students and enrollment growth as well as monitor workloads of
teams using the University’s technology, and assess the efficacy of these processes.
The Director will be a communicator, a
collaborator, and an innovator in the field of retention and student support services across the University.
Qualifications
Master’s degree required.
Minimum of 5 years of college/university experience
in student success services, advising, or enrollment services.
Experience setting goals and proven ability to meet them.
Knowledge of complexity of recruitment and retention.
3 or more years in a management capacity, preferably in a post-secondary
school.
Experience working in a goal-oriented environment or student enrollment operation a plus.
Familiarity with financial
aid and registration processes
Primary Responsibilities
Directs and leads student success initiatives,
such as; creating a culture of service with students at the center, reimagining student success and retention.
Oversees retention and
academic engagement of current students through the coordination of outreach efforts. Engages in first-year experience and related
efforts.
Implements strategies and initiatives to improve CARE team functioning.
Solid analytical and research skills to track
student success, develop goals and assess student support programs. Communicates and facilitates execution of goals to directly impact
student retention, persistence and timely completion.
Review and refine Student Success services, policies and procedures.
Supervise, mentor and develop a strong Student Success team.
Facilitate the management, monitoring and effective use of attendance
and grade tracking reports.
Collaborates with Academic Council on best practices with advising advising, suspension, probation and
warning processes to better support student persistence.
Secondary Responsibilities
Strong
interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with students, their families, faculty, staff and University partners.
Must be
a strong leader and skillful manager possessing the change management and flexibility needed to maintain peak performance.
High
degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
Self-directed with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities on a daily
basis.
Willingness to actively engage with students in supporting their success.
Knowledge and experience with human
resources, ADA, FERPA, budget management and other University operations.
