About Our Job
The Denver Fire Department is seeking qualified, innovative candidates for the position of Associate Accountant. This position provides professional accounting support to both internal and external customers to prepare, record, and review financial information. We are looking for candidates who possess exceptional customer service skills, effective knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and the ability to thrive in a team environment.
The Denver Fire Department is dedicated to providing quality, timely, and professional emergency services to those who live in, work in, and visit the City and County of Denver. In addition to providing emergency fire and medical services, the Department supports fire prevention efforts and public education programs to promote fire safety and emergency preparedness throughout our community. The Department consists of six divisions: Administration and Investigations, Fire Prevention Bureau, Technical Services, Safety and Training, Suppression (Operations), and Airport Fire and Rescue.
The Department’s operating budget for 2021 is 170 million. The department is comprised of 51 civilian personnel and 1,067 uniform members who operate and support 39 fire stations, which include Intergovernmental Fire Service Agreements with the cities of Englewood, Glendale, and Sheridan as well as the Skyline Neighborhood District.
Job Responsibilities include:
- Process department expenditures, revenue, and daily deposits of cash and checks in accordance with the City’s Fiscal rules and agency policies and procedures (including internal service deliveries, journals, and budget amendments). With keen attention to detail, ensure that work is accurate, thorough, and complete.
- Reconciles various revenue programs to ensure all revenue and reimbursements are recorded promptly. Follows up and resolves any IBTs, journals, and open invoices that are not paid timely or posted incorrectly in the financial system.
- Enters purchase and contract requisitions, reviews budget encumbrances, and prepares change orders as needed for the department.
- Processes refund requests for all DFD revenue programs.
- Prepares invoices and billings to outside entities, maintains internal tracking databases to ensure all revenue and reimbursements are recorded promptly
- Maintains monthly expenditure and revenue reports for each division and department, communicates results or concerns.
- Evaluate agency operating policies and procedures and make recommendations to management for changes to existing policies and procedures that might enhance operating efficiencies and or improve the fiscal performance of the department.
About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in accounting courses
- Two years of previous professional accounting work with experience in account receivable, account payable, reconciliations, trial balance reviews, and understanding expense documentation requirements
- Proficient Microsoft Office skills; Excel, Word, and Access
- Strong customer service experience

- Education requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
- Experience Requirement: One (1) year of professional level accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.
