Overview of the Mayor’s Office of Communications
The Mayor’s Office of Communications is responsible for developing and implementing communications programs and strategies in partnership with all City departments to promote the Administration’s agenda to Move Atlanta Forward. The Mayor’s Office of Communications oversees all traditional press and digital media outreach for the Administration. The office creates and implements comprehensive communications strategies to inform Atlanta residents about their government, expands access to information about City services, and provides residents with critical information in times of emergency or breaking news. The Communications team facilitates speechwriting, media access and support for special engagements for the Mayor and other members of the administration.
Job Description
The primary role of the Writer is to write remarks, scripts, letters and ceremonial documents for the Mayor and other senior leaders in City Hall. The Writer be chiefly responsible for writing scripts for the Mayor’s video greetings, providing talking points to top City leaders to support their public appearances, and writing ceremonial documents. The Writer will also produce the citations for the Mayor’s Phoenix Awards. The Writer works alongside the City’s Speechwriter, and reports to the Senior Communications Manager.
Essential Functions
Write scripts for Mayor’s video greetings
Write talking points and speeches for top City officials in support of their public appearances
Write ceremonial documents and citations for the Phoenix Award
Other writing assignments as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
5+ years of experience in communications, speechwriting, journalism, public affairs, marketing or related field
Ability to write quickly and cleanly
Ability to communicate complex concepts effectively and succinctly
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle simultaneous projects and meet established deadlines
Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment within general policy guidelines
Ability to work well with different team members and manage lateral reporting relationships
Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills
Ability to anticipate public reaction and think strategically
Must be able to work extended hours on an as-needed basis
Familiarity with, and understanding of, City of Atlanta municipal operations and departments desired
