The Department: The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is nationally accredited (and one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department is the steward of approximately 450 acres of parkland, featuring community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts and multiuse fields. Nearly 40 percent of the city is dedicated open space, and the department maintains approximately 40 linear miles of recreational trails.
The department is a leading provider of world class service, projects, programs and events that strengthen and build community connectivity. The department has a robust Capital Improvement Program, which includes projects for parks’ retrofits, infills, and new developments.
The Position:
Tree Trimmer I: This is the entry level class in the tree trimmer series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of moderately difficult tasks relating to the transplanting, trimming, pruning, and removal of trees. Generally, work is observed and reviewed during its performance and upon completion, and changes in procedure or exceptions to rules are explained as they arise.
Tree Trimmer II: This is the journey level in the tree trimmer series. A Tree Trimmer II is expected, within a framework of established procedures, to perform a variety of difficult tree trimming duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. Adequate performance at this level requires the exercise of initiative and independent judgement.
The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude and a proven record of teamwork and cooperation. Parks employees must reflect Carlsbad’s high standards and values and be dedicated to the stewardship of public facilities and lands. Must be able to work on weekends and be willing to volunteer for after hours duty on a rotating basis. International Society of Arboriculture Certification is a plus.

Tree Trimmer I – $20.96 – $27.42
Tree Trimmer II – $23.39 – $30.59
Key Responsibilities
Tree Trimmer I:
Trim trees, removing dead, diseased, dying, undesired branches, lower limbs, and remove cuttings.
Climb trees using ropes and saddle.
Use chainsaws, pole pruner and hand tools.
Remove dead, diseased, dying, and undesired branches and trims tops of trees using saws, and other tools, both hand and powered.
Operate aerial lift equipment, brush chipper, stump grinder and loader.
Maintain equipment and tools.
Check and assist in maintaining equipment.
Tree Trimmer II:
In addition to the responsibilities of Tree Trimmer I, may supervise the work of less experienced personnel as required.
Qualifications
Tree Trimmer I:
Knowledge of:
Basic tree trimming methods, techniques, equipment and procedures.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Climb and perform trimming work in trees.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Operate a variety of basic tree trimming tools and equipment.
Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Tree Trimmer II:In addition to the qualifications for Tree Trimmer I:
Knowledge of:
Tree planting and advanced arboriculture maintenance practices.
Ability to:
Use hand and power tools skillfully and safely.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.
Experience & Education
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.
Tree Trimmer I:
Possession of a valid Class A or B California Driver’s License
Tree Trimmer II:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Tree Trimmer I.
Possession of a valid Class A or B California Driver’s License.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The ability to obtain and maintain state and federally mandated requirements to operate assigned equipment, machinery and vehicles essential to the job.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS:
Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift, carry and manipulate objects weighing up to 50 lbs above the waist and to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Maintenance workers must be physically able to stand, stoop, bend, lift and maintain awkward body positions for prolonged periods of time. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions.
