JANITOR
Location: Building and Grounds
Description of Work:
Under general supervision of City Administration, performs manual work involving building operation and maintenance duties of city buildings and grounds; schedules and monitors city janitorial program.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Essential Functions
Sweeps, scrubs, strip and wax floors; cleans windows; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; replenishes supplies; removes trash from building; turns out lights; locks and unlocks building; washes windows; replaces lightbulbs; cleans up grounds; cleans restrooms; maintains grounds by watering, mowing and trimming; moves supplies and materials; removes snow and ice from walkways, driveways and other designated areas; schedules, monitors, inspects and participates in janitorial duties that keep assigned areas and clean and orderly and maintains buildings, grounds and equipment; work special events scheduled in city facilities; performs building and equipment maintenance work involving rough carpentry, plumbing, painting, and minor maintenance work on building heating and cooling systems and minor electrical repairs; operates hand and power tools; plants, sets, prunes and cares for trees, shrubs and flowers; keeps current any required licensure; performs related work as required.
Non-essential Functions
Answer city phone; records messages; interacts with the public, other employees, and supervisors in a polite, calm and professional manner; as requested, runs errands within the city; may be transferred to assist other departments in performing other work; acts to properly obey all orders given by supervisor(s) in charge of the position.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of all tasks associated with building and grounds maintenance; some knowledge of cleaning chemicals; skill in: operation of hand and power, ladder operation; ability to: properly mix chemical compounds for job accomplishment; follow written or oral directions; communicate effectively with co-workers, trainees, the public and all supervisory personnel.

Any combination of training and experience that will allow the incumbent to acquire the required knowledge, skills and abilities
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work performed by this position is performed indoors and outdoors, thus, inclement weather is likely to be encountered; this job requires moderate physical activity and some moderate lifting. Normal work week is 40 hours with the extended work day requirements. Stand by duty will be encountered to meet special event needs. Must have current Nebraska driver’s license.
