DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Houston Public Library seeks a creative, innovative, and highly customer service-oriented Library Service Specialist to join the Houston Metropolitan Research Center team. This position will work with imaging equipment to duplicate and/or electronically store the historic collections archives and photographs as well as providing direct customer assistance at the reference desks.
Essential job duties and responsibilities include:
Provide basic research and gather necessary information to resolve customer inquiries via mail, telephone, and email.
Provide reference services and research assistance in-person and virtually.
Operate scanner-based and digital camera-based equipment to capture large numbers of rare and fragile, primarily unbound materials.
Track and maintain reproduction requests and related inventory projects. Troubleshoot and explain basic problems with hardware, software, or image quality.
Instructing customers in the detailed use of subject specific reference sources including websites, databases, books, microprint sources, archival collections, and the HPL Digital Archives.
Performing other duties as assigned and essential to efficient library operation.
This position requires some evening and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing

Requires a Bachelor’s degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is required.

PREFERENCES
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
Experience working in a Special Collections or Archives environment. Experience with scanning, imaging, and duplication equipment is highly preferred. Basic photography skills, experience editing images with Photoshop, using Epson large format scanners, and using OneDrive is preferred. Knowledge of library research strategies and techniques used by a variety of disciplines. Experience working with the public. Willingness to work independently and make decisions; ability to carry out complex instructions; detail-oriented; experience with both Windows and Mac-based computers and software.
