CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER (ELECTRICAL optional)
Permitting and Inspections Department –
Join our team and help enhance the safety and quality of life of Portland’s residents, visitors, and workers. The City of Portland seeks a full-time code enforcement officer or electrician to work both independently and as part of a team to enforce plumbing, electrical, life safety, and building codes (Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code – MUBEC), and other city ordinances. This self-motivated individual will conduct field inspections on commercial and residential construction projects, read building plans, and communicate effectively with the public to resolve code violations. Candidates must have excellent customer service skills to be able to work with a diverse base of property owners, architects, engineers, contractors and the general public. Preferred candidates will have knowledge and experience in building code administration and enforcement, building trades and construction, general inspection work, and/or plan review. Familiarity with computer programs including laptop/field tablet equipment is a plus. The candidate must have Maine Code Enforcement Certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, in legal issues, land use, internal plumbing, subsurface wastewater disposal, and building, energy, radon, and ventilation standards. Journeyman or Master Electricians are encouraged to apply, but this is not a requirement. Must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license, a vehicle for daily work use, and must have and maintain a good driving record. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
CEBA Union position – Grade 18M-SP – Starting pay $990.38 – $1,050.75/week, commensurate with experience, plus an additional 6% stipend if certified as a Maine Master Electrician or Master Plumber.
