Position Summary
Reporting to the HR Operations & Data Manager and Associate Dean of Faculty and HR, the Human Resources Generalist will support a variety of HR duties in Mailman School of Public Health. Primary responsibilities will include recruitment, onboarding, training, learning & development, and employee engagement. The HR Generalist will support the mission, vision, and values upheld by Mailman School of Public Health. The incumbent will provide high level customer service to all staff and engage with all members of Mailman School of Public Health.
Responsibilities
Recruitment/Onboarding 35%
Manages full-cycle recruitment and onboarding, including but not limited to initial intake meeting with manager, sourcing, screening and interviewing candidates, conducting reference checks, extending job offers, and onboarding for all Dean’s Office positions
Move candidates and hiring managers through recruitment process including through Columbia’s ATS (TalentLink). Sourcing and screening qualified candidates to hiring managers; assisting with interview scheduling as needed and keeping candidates engaged
Ensures the required background and any other relevant employment clearances are received prior to candidate’s start date
Coordinating new hire onboarding for all new employees. This includes scheduling new staff to attend New Hire Welcome Program and creating a Columbia University Network ID
Works closely with Dean’s Office departments to discuss recruitment and retention needs
Assists hiring manager with creating Job Descriptions and ensuring the accurate job descriptions are stored in TalentLink
Manage staff transitions, including promotions and salary adjustments for the Dean’s Office
Conduct Exit Interviews for departing staff members in the Dean’s Office
Training/Learning & Development 20%
Assist HR Operations & Data Manager with creating initiatives for professional development opportunities.
Coordinate and develop events and other professional development opportunities focused on employee growth and development that tie to the overall vision and strategy of the school
Assist with developing training materials and coordinating both in-person and online learning
Engagement 15%
Work closely with HR Operations & Data Manager and departments to create new employee engagement initiatives to help build upon the School’s culture
Work closely with departments and employees to improve work relationships, maintain an engaged workforce and retain the best talent
Reporting 20%
Assist with creating and analyzing reports that presents relevant metrics and insights to drive decision making at senior levels of the school
Ensures data is accurately maintained and updated data is provided
Assist in analyzing labor turnover data to identifying improvement opportunities
Assist with generating and providing reports for annual reporting collections by organizations like ASPPH and IVY Plus

Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in education, training &/or experience
Minimum of 4 years of progressive and successful HR experience
Ability to prioritize work related demands and meet deadlines while working under pressure
Demonstrated experience working independently with minimal supervision.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships
High level and effective interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written
Knowledge of principles and practices of training and development methods and techniques
Experience handling full-cycle recruitment with a white glove approach for both candidates and hiring managers
Eagerness to learn and develop in different functional areas of HR
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and ability to quickly learn new software
Preferred Qualifications
SHRM certification is highly preferred
Familiarity with PeopleSoft application
