General Summary
This position requires radio dispatching and clerical work operating City communication equipment and systems. The employee is responsible for making effective and efficient decisions based on established policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
This position works under the direction and general supervision of the Communications Supervisor. General and specific instructions are received and work is performed with reasonable discretion and independent judgment. This position does not require supervision of others.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Receives, relays, and/or transmits routine and emergency calls for police services.
Performs clerical and administrative work including answering phones, delivering messages, and typing records and forms for the Police Department.
Dispatches police units to crime scenes, emergency situations, and routine service calls.
Maintains records of all calls, dispatches, and other pertinent information and facts.
Monitors location and availability of patrol units.
Notifies wrecker, ambulance units, and other emergency services to be dispatched to emergencies, crime scenes, and accidents when required.
Monitors radio calls from other agencies.
Maintains all incident/offense reports on victim log.
Operates NCIC equipment and/or software to retrieve information as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – – Skilled in operating radio transmitting equipment.
– Working knowledge of office practice and procedures.
– Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of software.
– Skilled in carrying out orders with precision and speed.
– Ability to make decisions quickly and accurately.
– Ability to learn and apply public safety regulations and procedures.
– Ability to obtain Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification.
– Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
– Proficient in handling stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
– Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
– Ability to appropriately maintain confidential and sensitive information.
– Excellent customer service skills.
Training and Experience – – Associates degree in related field preferred.
– High School Diploma required.
– Two (2) years relevant experience preferred.
– Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
– Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification preferred.
– An equivalent combination of training and experience which indicates an ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Physical and Enviromental Requirements – – Use of sensory skills, (vision, hearing, speaking) required.
– Physical dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment required.
– Lifting objects of 5 to 25 pounds may be required.
– Requires extensive use of computer equipment.
– Requires ability to work rotating shift, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP): Employees who are active members of the South Miami Pension Plan are eligible to enter the DROP on or after the first day of the month following the employee reaching their normal retirement date as defined in accordance with the South Miami Pension Plan
