The East Bay Municipal Utility District, an industry-leading water and wastewater treatment utility seeks a motivated professional to oversee, supervise, schedule, assign, direct, coordinate, and review the work of technical staff responsible for drafting and engineering designer work in civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and/or large diameter pipeline disciplines using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) in both 2D and 3D and preparation of Building Information Models (BIM) using a variety of software tools.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, there is one current regular opening in the Facilities Drafting Section of the Engineering Services Division (ESD), part of EBMUD’s Engineering & Construction Department. The incumbent must be able to provide technical leadership to staff on complex CADD and BIM assignments using both Bentley and AutoDesk software, and also establish and foster effective cooperative work relationships with others at all levels within the EBMUD organization, including engineering, programming, and technical staff.
ESD is currently seeking a motivated and experienced supervisor whose typical duties may include:
• Hiring, leading, motivating, training, and coaching drafting staff and conducting performance appraisals.
• Assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of staff engineering designers and drafters and providing them with technical leadership in drafting and design.
• Coordinating with civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical project engineers regarding project priority, design changes and clarifications, drawing presentations, and drafting cost management.
• Developing and maintaining an effective drawing data and file management system.
• Developing recommendations for selecting and updating computer hardware and software, and also supplies and equipment that enhance the group’s productivity.
• Supporting development of BIM design workflow improvements and pilot efforts and implementing and maintaining CADD and BIM Guidelines to ensure work quality of all drawings produced by both in-house projects and outside consultant work.
• Providing project management and administration for outside consultants, including writing requests for proposals, interviewing consultant, negotiating, and writing contracts; and
• Evaluating operations and activities, tracking CADD work completed by the unit, development of budgets and reporting work progress and project status to supervisor.
Competitive candidates will demonstrate the following:
Knowledge of:
• Drafting standard principles, practices, and techniques.
• Principles and practices; civil, structural, mechanical electrical engineering principals; algebra, plane geometry, and plane trigonometry; pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
• A variety of computer aided drafting and BIM software systems and applications (especially MicroStation, AutoCAD and Revit), hardware and operating systems necessary to perform drafting assignments while maintaining appropriate records and archives.
• Industry drafting and engineering designer standards and detailing practices in preparing civil, mechanical, structural, electrical, and instrumentation control drawings
• Basic budgeting, project management
Skills in:
• Managing multiple high quality drafting projects, that conform to EBMUD drafting standards and are completed on schedule, and within budget; and
• Writing a variety of materials including memos, project progress reports, and performance plans.
Ability to:
• Communicate effectively with others.
• Deal effectively with staff’s job performance and/or personal conduct issues.
• Interpreting sketches, maps, and drawings; coordinating work activities; operating computers for business functions, to make calculations and use of computer equipment in drafting. and
• Lead the drafting group that includes Engineering Designers and Drafters who perform complex drafting work.
Flexible/hybrid work from home schedule may be available for some positions in this job classification.
The salary range is $10,289 per month increasing to $10,803, $11,343, and $11,910 after 6, 18, and 30 months, respectively.

1a. A bachelor’s degree, with major course work in engineering, survey, architecture, geography, cartography, or computer science, AND
1b. Two years of mathematics related to mapping or drafting, including algebra, geometry, and plane trigonometry.
2a. Two years of CADD or business computer application experience, AND
2b. Four years of related drafting or mapping experience comparable to or higher than the EBMUD class of Senior Drafter.
3. Must possess physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the work.
4. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
