Participates in the Honolulu Fire Fighter Recruit Training Program and receives intensive classroom and field training in the theories, techniques, methods, and procedures used in firefighting and rescue work; under immediate supervision, performs or assists in firefighting and other specialized emergency operations; and performs other related duties as required. Work involves 24-hour shifts, weekend and holiday work. Position requires use of protective equipment due to possible exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions or environments.

The following requirements must be met as of May 17, 2022, or as stated:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Students who will be graduating high school in the class of 2022 may apply. The education requirement must be met by June 30, 2022. Graduation from high school is subject to verification.
Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Valid driver’s license (automobile), prior to appointment.
WRITTEN TEST
In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you must pass a written test which may cover the following areas: reading comprehension, mathematical skills, mechanical reasoning, logical reasoning, human relations, maps, and diagrams.
The written test will be administered ONLY on OAHU and ONLY on August 13, 2022.

The Department of Human Resources reserves the right to amend the testing process if there is a resurgence of COVID-19 cases and stricter guidelines are imposed by the Governor of the State of Hawaii or the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu. This may include imposing procedures to comply with applicable guidelines and mandates at the test site, and to ensure the health and safety of test administration staff, facility staff, and participants.
4) Suitability Review
The Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions, dismissals from employment, and separations from military service under other than honorable conditions to determine suitability for employment. In addition, the selectee’s driving records may also be reviewed. Due to the nature of the position, selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
NOTE: At the time of interview/assessment with HFD, candidates will be required to submit a copy of their driver’s license, and may also be required to submit copies of current traffic abstract(s).
5) Medical Evaluation
Candidates must meet the medical requirements established for the City and County of Honolulu for the position of Fire Fighter Recruit I. If selected, a medical examination will be administered to determine whether the candidate meets the standards for vision, hearing, pulmonary function, etc. Candidates who do not meet the medical requirements will be disqualified. The vision requirements are listed below:
