Summary:
The Registered Nurse is a practitioner who is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients in an inpatient environment. This individual demonstrates competency in delivery of care to a primarily adult population. The Staff RN-Inpatient job description has incorporated essential functions which are adapted from the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition (2010).

NURSING PROCESS: ASSESSMENT: The Registered Nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health and/or the situation. DIAGNOSIS: The Registered Nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnoses or the issues. OUTCOMES IDENTIFICATION: The Registered Nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation. PLANNING: The Registered Nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. IMPLEMENTATION: The Registered Nurse implements the identified plan. EVALUATION: The Registered Nurse evaluates progress toward the attainment of outcomes.

EDUCATION: The registered nurse attains knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice. The registered nurse: Participates in ongoing educational activities related to appropriate knowledge bases and professional issues. Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry to address learning and personal growth needs. Identifies learning needs based on nursing knowledge, the various roles the nurse may assume, and the changing needs of the population. Participates in formal or informal consultations to address issues in nursing practice as an application of education and a knowledge base. Shares educational findings, experiences, and ideas with peers. Contributes to a work environment conducive to the education of healthcare professionals. Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area, practice setting, role, or situation which includes specialty certification.

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AND RESEARCH: The registered nurse integrates evidence and research findings into practice. The registered nurse: Utilizes current evidence-based nursing knowledge, including research findings, to guide practice. Incorporates evidence when initiating changes in nursing practice. Participates, as appropriate to educational level and position, in the formulation of evidence-based practice through research. Shares personal or third-party research findings with colleagues and peers.
Job Standard 5:
QUALITY OF PRACTICE: The registered nurse contributes to a quality nursing practice. The registered nurse: Uses creativity and innovation in nursing practice to improve care delivery. Identifies aspects of practice important for quality monitoring. Uses benchmarks to measure/monitor the quality, safety, and effectiveness of nursing practice. Uses the PDSA model to improve the quality of nursing practice and outcomes. Participates on and/or leads interprofessional teams to evaluate clinical care or health services. Participates in and/or leads efforts to minimize costs and unnecessary duplication. Identifies problems that occur in day-to-day work routines in order to correct process inefficiencies. Demonstrates consistency in hourly rounding key behaviors. Consistently responds to patient call lights/needs in a timely manner. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY: The registered nurse practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner. The registered nurse: Promotes a practice environment that reduces environmental health risks for workers and patients. Assesses the practice environment for factors such as sound, odor, noise, and light that threaten health. Advocates for the judicious and appropriate use of products in health care. Communicates environmental health risks and exposure reduction strategies to patients, families, colleagues, and communities. Utilizes scientific evidence to determine if a product or treatment is an environmental threat. Participates in strategies to promote healthy communities.

COMMUNICATION: The registered nurse communicates effectively in all areas of practice. The Registered Nurse: Assesses her or his own communication skills in encounters with patients, families, and colleagues. Seeks continuous improvement in communication and conflict resolution skills. Conveys information to patients, families, the interprofessional team, and others in communication formats that promote accuracy. Questions the rationale supporting care processes and decisions when they do not appear to be in the best interest of the patient. Discloses observations or concerns related to hazards and errors in care or practice environment to the appropriate level. Maintains communication with other providers to minimize risks associated with transfers and transition in care delivery. Contributes her or his professional perspective in discussions with the interprofessional team. COLLABORATION: The registered nurse collaborates with patients, families, and others in the conduct of nursing practice. The registered nurse: Partners with others to effect change and produce positive outcomes through the sharing of knowledge of the patient and/or situation. Promotes conflict management and engagement. Participates in building consensus or resolving conflict in the context of patient care. Applies group process and negotiation techniques with patients and colleagues. Adheres to standards and applicable codes of conduct that govern behavior among peers and colleagues to create a work environment that promotes cooperation, respect, and trust. Engages in teamwork and team-building process. Prepared, eligible, and enthusiastic to precept professional colleagues, as appropriate.

LEADERSHIP: The registered nurse demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession. The registered nurse: Oversees the nursing care given by others while retaining accountability for the quality of care given to the patient. Mentors colleagues for the advancement of nursing practice, the profession, and quality health care. Treats colleagues with respect, trust, and dignity. Develops communication and conflict resolution skills. Participates in professional organizations. Communicates effectively with the patient and colleagues. Seeks ways to advance nursing autonomy and accountability. Participates in efforts to influence healthcare policy involving patients and the profession. ETHICS: The registered nurse practices ethically. The registered nurse: Uses the Guide to the Code of Ethics for Nurses: Interpretation and Application (ANA, 2008) to guide practice. Recognizes the centrality of the patient and family as core members of any health care team. Assists patients in self-determination and informed decision-making. Speaks up and advocates for the patient, when appropriate, to question health care practice when necessary for safety, quality improvement, and equitable care.
Job Standard 8:
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EVALUATION: The registered nurse evaluates her or his own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations. The registered nurse: Engages in self-evaluation of practice on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength and areas for professional development. Obtains informal feedback regarding one’s own practice from patients, peers, professional colleagues, and others. Interacts with peers and colleagues to enhance her or his own professional nursing practice or role performance. Provides peers with formal or informal constructive feedback regarding their practice or role performance.
Job Standard 9:
RESOURCE UTILIZATION: The registered nurse utilizes appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible. The registered nurse: Assesses individual patient care needs and resources available to achieve desired outcomes. Identifies patient care needs, potential for harm, complexity of the task, and desired outcomes when considering resource allocation. Delegates elements of care to appropriate health care workers in accordance with any applicable legal or policy parameters or principles. Identifies the evidence when evaluating resources. Advocates for resources, including technology, that enhance nursing practice. Modifies practice when necessary to promote positive interaction between patients, care providers, and technology. Works in an aligned partnership with the Flow Coordinator, Shift Coordinator, and other hospital leaders to effectively manage all dynamics of patient flow.

SHARED GOVERNANCE: All professional nurses are partners in shared decision-making in the areas of Nursing Professional Practice, Development, Quality and Safety, and Research. The registered nurse: Is able to articulate the vision, framework and goal of Shared Governance. Actively participates in department council meetings through attendance, involvement, and project completion. EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: Clinical competence and experience in the care and management of target patient populations specific to area of employment.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION: Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of education at an accredited School of Nursing in order to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse is required. Upon hire any non-BSN nurse with less than one year of licensed registered nurse experience will be required to enroll in a BSN (or higher nursing degree) program. Acceptance into a program is expected within 15 months of hire and the degree program must be completed within 5 years of enrollment, or 6 years if program is MSN, DNP or PhD in Nursing.
EDUCATION PREFERRED: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.

LICENSURE DESCRIPTION: Requires current state of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact). American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire.
