Position Overview:
The USMA Field Medical Strategy and Operations Principal Manager provides strategic thought partnership to Field Medical stakeholders, manages relevant Field Medical team activities and facilitates multiple business processes required to ensure the team is able to successfully and compliantly execute on its strategic plans. This is an individual contributor position.
This individual will play a Principal Manager role in leading meeting facilitation, communications, being an advisor to Field Medical partners, championing strategic planning and prioritization, and monitoring execution and impact of tactics. As a Principal Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring assigned initiatives, projects, and activities are planned and executed in a consistently high-quality, relevant, on-time and within-scope manner. You will be accountable to help ensure that the team delivers on its priorities. This individual has developed expertise in a variety of work processes or activities typically developed through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience. Typically acts as a lead, coordinating the work of others, but not a supervisor. Works autonomously within established procedures and practices. Anticipates patterns and links; looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications. Generates new and innovative solutions to complex problems.
Leads one or more teams in the performance of a variety of tasks that are often complex. Spends a majority of working time performing the same work processes and activities as employees on a team. Analyzes complex problems and delivers solutions where precedent may not exist.
Core Accountabilities:
Project Management: Deliver consistently on high quality project management to enable relevant Field Medical team’s organizational success. This includes:
Leading the development of strategic plans and tactical deliverables as a trusted thought partner to the relevant Field Medical team.
Setting and managing resources, timelines and budget to deliver projects on-time and within budget.
Track and monitor progress and impact of Field Medical activities.
Execute on the planning and facilitation of relevant Field Medical team meetings, including: agenda development, meeting facilitation with focus on team inclusion, and capturing key documentation with follow-up on action items as needed.
Identify risks and lead the team in developing risk mitigation strategies.
Drive the relevant Field Medical team in ruthless prioritization exercises while ensuring delivery of tactics with highest medical impact.
Engage with vendors as needed to execute on projects.
Lead the delivery of Field Medical or cross-function events and projects.
As needed, may have alliance management responsibilities including: serving as the central point of contact for internal coordination and external interface with the partner/external company; Identifying key issues, setting meeting agendas, scheduling and ensuring the relevant Field Medical team is prepared for partner/external interactions; working with partner company to set the direction and scope for implementation of the partnership including key activities, timelines and responsibilities on either side; regular communications with partner alliance management counterpart.
Serve as a senior leader in Field Medical teams and cross-functional initiatives.
Influential coach and collaborator with senior leaders to achieve priority business objective.
Independent leadership of high impact cross-functional projects.
Communication & Engagement:
Develop and execute a strategic communication plan for relevant Field Medical team’s organization engagement.
Promote a culture embodying Genentech Operating Principles.
Identifies opportunities across CMG/Global organization to increase synergies and opportunities for collaboration to make impact to patients/customers.
Monitor team health and develop action plan to support team formation and development.
Develop and execute change management plans as needed.
Expert in emotional intelligence and trusted coach to the team.

Business Processes and Compliance:
Provide guidance to relevant Field Medical leadership and teams to ensure business processes are followed appropriately and compliantly by the team. Proactively identify risks, including process gaps, escalating the issues to appropriate stakeholders for risk mitigation.
Working with the team and appropriate compliance/process SMEs, solve complex issues through appropriate risk mitigation; when appropriate simplify work processes
Identify and develop action plans for process improvements and risk mitigation that have the greatest impact across Field Medical/USMA/CMG. Pull through across Field Medical.
Technology Systems:
When needed, working with appropriate IT and business stakeholders, create or update technology systems to increase efficiency or fill a process need in Field Medical
Agile Champion:
Applies agile project management methodology to relevant Field Medical team or project teams, through appropriate use of practices and tools (i.e. Agile/Scrum, Kanban, or other methodologies and Smartsheets, Trello, Jamboard, Miro, or other applications).
Coaches and influences relevant Field Medical team or project teams to adopt and perpetuate an agile mindset (i.e. customer satisfaction, agility, transparency, collaboration, accountability, empowerment, etc.).
Leads implementation and change management of agile project management methodologies to support the needs of the broader Field Medical and USMA organization.
Maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant therapeutic and/or regional area strategies, tactics and ways of operating.
Expert knowledge of field medical processes and principles, including operationalization of field medical tactics.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCES:
Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree such as PharmD, PhD, MBA degree is preferred)
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is preferred.
Business travel, by air or car is required for regular internal and external business meetings.
Ability to embrace and believe in Genentech’s operating Principles.
8 or more years relevant experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology, preferably in Medical Affairs or project management.
Working knowledge of drug development and medical affairs; in depth knowledge and experience in product development, drug commercialization and healthcare/market landscape.
