Are you passionate about making a difference through legislative advocacy? We’re seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Legislative Assistant to support our Director of Legislation and team of legislative attorneys at the Institute for Justice. Working from our headquarters in Arlington, VA, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping and executing legislative strategies, tracking important bills, and ensuring seamless internal management.
Key Responsibilities:
Scheduling: Coordinate meetings, events, and legislative activities, and liaising with state legislators, our advocacy teams, and external partners.
Tracking and Monitoring: Keep a close watch on the status of sponsored legislation and identify key bills of strategic importance.
Library and Web Management: Maintain a library of model legislation and update legislative webpages.
Supporting Materials: Update materials in support of legislation and organize resources for committee hearings.
Conferences: Manage logistics for legislative conferences, including participation, exhibitions, and follow-ups.
Testifier Management: Ensure testifiers are prepared for hearings and manage key relationships.
Government Registration: Track registrations and provide information for lobbying reports.
After-Session Planning: Assist in planning processes related to legislation and events.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with government affairs software (e.g., Quorum) and social media.
Previous involvement with state legislatures or lobbying firms.
Bachelor’s degree in political science or related field.

This role involves occasional weekend work during state legislative sessions (January to May), and attendance at 3-4 conferences (2-4 days each) in August and September, where you’ll represent IJ and contribute to impactful legislative efforts.
