# TRGPD Clerkships and Internships
## Overview
Texas RioGrande Public Defender (TRGPD) regularly hosts undergraduate students, recent graduates, and law students in offices across our service area for a semester, internship, externship, or the summer. Interns and clerks will have the opportunity to gain experience in a traditional public defender setting or through our Operation Lone Star Special Project. TRGPD clerkships and internships are unpaid. Applicants who wish to join TRGPD for the summer should seek funding through their school, or other external sources.
## Preferences
TRGPD welcomes applicants with the following preferences:
– Spanish fluency
– Interest in rural or border placement
## Application Process
Applicants interested in joining TRGPD for a clerkship or internship should provide the following information to apply:
– Select which best applies to you: undergraduate student or recent graduate seeking internship; law student seeking clerkship; or other
– Select which division you would like to work with: traditional PD Program; Operation Lone Star Special Project
– List the types of cases or areas of public defense that interest you
– List any tasks you are particularly interested in helping with or particular skills you’d like to develop with us
– Name of the university where you obtained or will obtain your most recent law degree
– Approximate date of graduation or anticipated graduation date from law school
– Name of your undergraduate school
– Approximate date of graduation from undergraduate school
– Describe your Spanish language proficiency using the Interagency Language Roundtable Language Skill Level Descriptions
– Upload a cover letter addressing one or more of the following:
– Describe a significant legal or social justice experience and its impact on your plan to pursue public interest law
– Describe some of the unique challenges you think or know clients in our service area may experience in rural or border areas and how an agency like TRGPD can help
– Describe any connection, personal or professional, to our service area and the client populations we serve
– Upload your resume
– Upload a writing sample
– Upload your references
– Describe how you heard about TRGPD and/or TRGPD clerkships/internships
– Answer whether you are related to any current employee of TRGPD, TRGPD’s Board of Directors, or other person that is compensated by TRGPD for their services
## Compensation
TRGPD clerkships and internships are unpaid. Applicants who wish to join TRGPD for the summer should seek fellowships or other public interest funding through their school or other external sources.
