In this exciting role, you will provide state of the art Linux computational resources in support of the science at Berkeley Lab. We help to enable some of the most advanced fundamental research in the world by providing the computing tools, networks, and expertise to enable pioneering science.
What You Will Do:
Provide HPC user services support to national laboratory and university researchers including porting, compiling, and debugging applications to run on Linux clusters; performing benchmarking activities to test new systems; developing specifications for procurement, and acceptance testing.
Profile, analyze and optimize scientific applications for best performance. Develop in-house tools and implement third-party software to support operating systems, high performance interconnects, variants of MPI, scientific applications and libraries.
Provide telephone and email support for scientific users doing parallel and serial computation on Linux clusters. This includes providing assistance with account management, use of systems, use of compilers, software and tools, job submission to scheduler, use of parallel filesystems, and transferring data to and from system.
Hold training sessions to teach users best practices for running applications on large systems.
Develop and publish user and technical documentation on the use of systems and assist Linux cluster administrators with troubleshooting and repair of Linux clusters.
Work on and resolve complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
Develop and implement outreach strategies to increase the use of scientific computing at LBNL and UC Berkeley.
Communicate with user groups, analyze usage, develop forecasts, help with computation, storage and data management planning to meet user needs, identification of new technologies, standards, and architectures of relevance to providing scientific computing for research, define requirements for future HPC systems.
What is Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field, followed by eight years of progressive, post-baccalaureate work experience which includes at least two years of high-performance computing end-user services consulting support for Linux clusters. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to provide high performance computing end-user consulting for Linux clusters;
Experience in configuring and fine-tuning job schedulers and resource managers (Slurm, PBS, etc.)
Scientific parallel programming on Linux clusters using C/C++, Fortran, Python, MPI, OpenMP, multithreading and multicore technologies, GPU;
Designing, developing, porting, tuning, profiling, debugging and optimizing parallel and serial HPC applications on Linux clusters;
Ability to develop and implement performance benchmarks and usability acceptance tests for new HPC systems. Direct experience with and doing computation for one or more scientific research domains (e.g. Molecular dynamics, Computational fluid dynamics, Computational biology.)
Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
Ability to network and collaborate with key contacts outside their own area of expertise.
Desired Qualifications:
Ability to implement and troubleshoot infiniband fabrics, subnet manager, and parallel filesystems.
Ability to analyze, recommend and implement job scheduler algorithms to best utilize large shared systems.
Experience using or programming with following: Open OnDemand, Spark, Globus Online, Tensorflow, PyTorch, Cloud Computing, Jupyter Notebooks, R, Rstudio, Matlab.
