This role will oversee production editorial staff for one or more imprints. Collaborate with other Production Editorial leadership to define house style and procedural guidelines. Implement and enforce style rules for production editorial staff. Perform staff reviews and assessments and hire and train staff as needed. Review/approve cover/jacket materials before printing; ensure quality is maintained. Review/approval for interiors, depending on imprint. Production-edit select fiction and/or nonfiction titles per year. Technical proficiency in MS Word, Acrobat PDF markup tools, and Workflow/Metadata systems is required as well as the ability to train others.What you’ll do: Assess workloads and assign titles to PEs in consultation with the ME. Determine style guidelines. Perform staff reviews and assessments, including performance improvement plans (PIPs) as needed. Hire and train additional staff as needed. Approve time-off requests while maintaining departmental coverage. General staff management: status/team meetings, monitoring workflows, procedures training.Review/approve cover/jacket materials before printing; ensure quality is maintained. Review/approve interiors, depending on imprint.Act as Production Editor on select titles per season.Meeting/communicating with designers/editors/production managers/art dept/managing editors/legal dept/authors as needed concerning: scheduling; revisions suggested by copy editors or proofreaders; unusually high copyediting, proofreading, and indexing costs, or high correction costs due to many corrections marked at first or second pass by proofreaders or authors; complying with Legal Department directives.Communicate in a professional and timely manner with publishers, managing editors, designers, art, editorial, and production managers regarding status of projects and route related materials to editors, designers, production managers. Update progress of projects in various digital tracking systems, using correct file-naming conventions and following procedures. What you’ll bring: Background in adult trade fiction and nonfiction including 4C titles, cookbooks, and titles of various complexityAbility to manage a team of production editors, helping them to anticipate problems, troubleshoot solutions, and prioritizeStrong knowledge of grammar and punctuation, including familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style Meticulous attention to detail; work well under pressure; good oral and verbal communicationAbility to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects at onceWork well with others in a tactful manner, displaying common sense and initiative.
