Job Title: Mechanic I
Department: Streets
Classification: Non-Exempt
Position Summary: Performs various administrative, technical, and mechanical duties at the apprentice mechanic level for the Streets Department and Fleet Maintenance, consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement.
Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Streets.
Hiring Range: $24.90-$28.02
Pay Range: $24.90-$37.36
Essential Job Functions:
Preventative Maintenance
Provides entry-level maintenance on all types of gas and diesel-powered vehicles, including heavy and small equipment. Monitors, coordinates, and performs preventative maintenance duties in compliance with established schedules and procedures. Maintains records and logs on equipment maintenance. Enters repair orders and runs service reports. Prepares oil samples on equipment. Performs other duties relative to preventive maintenance as required.
Performs electrical diagnostics and repair on all types of vehicles and equipment. Tire changing and repair, the ability and understanding to read hydraulic and electrical schematics. Performs field service as needed on all types of equipment. Washes vehicles and takes other appropriate maintenance measures, as needed. Performs other duties relative to equipment maintenance as required or assigned.
Repair/Mechanic
Performs entry-level mechanical repairs. Repairs, rebuilds, replaces and/or fabricates parts on all City of Aspen vehicles and equipment as necessary. Follows established standard repair procedures and works within appropriate time frame to insure professional and efficient repairs. Employs welding and fabrication skills in the repair of vehicles and equipment and to assist the Street Department and/or other City departments in their normal operations or in Special Projects.
Diagnostics
Performs entry-level diagnostics. Examines and analyzes gasoline and diesel-powered vehicle parts and/or units to identify problems. Determines type and degree of problem. Diagnoses solution and/or repair to correct problems. Reads, studies, interprets, and determines schematics for diagnosis and repair. Uses available resources such as training, factory bulletins, Mitchell Manual, or other mechanics to accurately diagnose problems and identify solutions.
Purchasing
Monitors and tracks inventory, orders, and purchases supplies to maintain an adequate inventory. Keeps track of purchasing receipts and reconciliation of purchasing card.
Other Duties
Assists the Street department with snow removal duties as needed, ability to operate various type of snow removal equipment. Assists with other department activities such as painting streets, flagging or asphalt repair.
Training/Safety
Attends meetings/training sessions as necessary. Maintains shop and storage orderliness and cleanliness.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: One year of vehicle/equipment mechanic experience on all types of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook (Email). Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid Colorado CDL driver’s license class B with tanker endorsement. Air Brake Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire. Must be willing to obtain training in engine maintenance and repair, electric vehicle maintenance and repair, and other mechanical/technical areas.
Additional Requirements: Must possess own set of basic mechanical hand tools and toolbox.
NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
NOTE: This position requires, and employment is contingent upon passing, a physical examination, Criminal Background Check, and CDL Reference Check upon hire.
NOTE: This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) holders which includes but is not limited to: pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference form.
Position Type and Work Hours:
Regular full time, hours may vary with workload.
Evenings/Weekends may be required dependent on emergency repairs and snow removal in addition to the forty hour work week during winter season.
On-Call: Required to perform mandatory on-call duty and must be immediately available 24/7 during the winter months, and on a rotating schedule during summer months. Such activities include but are not limited to snow removal, sweeping and/or flushing for high pollution days, monitoring mudslides and high water, sandbagging, cleaning up debris, fallen trees and stop sign repair.
Work Environment:
Indoors: Work is performed in a well-lighted, heated, and vented shop. Exposure to some fumes, dust, chemicals, heat, and noise is present.
Outdoors/Off-Site: Subject to do equipment repairs outside in all types of weather conditions.
