Founded in 1855 as the nation’s first land-grant university, Michigan State University (MSU) enrolls over 50,500 undergraduate,
graduate, and professional students. MSU is known internationally as a major public research university with global reach and extraordinary
impact. Home to nationally ranked and recognized academic, residential college, and service-learning programs, MSU is a diverse community of
dedicated students and scholars, athletes and artists, scientists and leaders.
The Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate
Education and Dean of Undergraduate Studies (APUE) seeks an Assistant Dean of University Advising to help lead MSU’s undergraduate
student success initiatives by operationalizing MSU’s stated beliefs that every student it admits has the capacity to learn, thrive,
and graduate and that it is MSU’s responsibility to provide an inclusive, equitable curriculum and environment with the academic,
social, wellness, and financial support our students need to persist in college and succeed after graduation. The position will work closely
with the assistant, deans, associate deans, and directors in the Office of the APUE and MSU’s sixteen degree-granting undergraduate
colleges to develop, oversee, and support advising functions and initiatives for 40,000 undergraduate students.
The Assistant
Dean for University Advising reports to the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and is a
strategic leader within the Provost’s Office and a member of the APUE’s leadership team. As part of MSU’s Strategic Plan
for Student Success, we envision an advising community that is appropriately structured and adequately resourced to equitably meet the
diversity of our students’ needs, to help students develop their purposes and passions, to support the migration of students between
majors/minors and colleges at MSU, and to meet MSU’s strategic goal of an 86% graduation rate with no opportunity gaps by
2030.
MSU has committed to restructuring and infusing resources into its advising community to ensure that MSU provides
holistic and intrusive advising necessary for all students to learn, thrive, and graduate. The Assistant Dean for University Advising will
serve as the most senior representative of and primary point of contact for professional advising at MSU. This person will be responsible
for leading implementation of our MSU Advising Initiative in collaboration with University Advising Leadership through leadership,
management, and engagement in the following areas: Strategic Communications, Management, and Implementation of Policies and Practices;
Advisor Supervision, Training, and Professional Development; Assessment and Advising Learning Outcomes Oversight.
