Salary: For an entry-level Media Relations Specialist, the annual salary will range from $55,834 – $75,356. For more senior Media Relations Specialist, the annual salary will range from $55,834 – $94,879 with a mid-point goal of $75,356. Actual starting salary will depend on qualifications and experience.

Telework: This position works on-site in the Minnesota Senate Building and Capitol during the legislative session. When the legislature is not in session, flexible hybrid options may be available.

Days of Work/Hours: Monday-Friday/8am-5pm. This position requires long and irregular hours and the ability to meet tight deadlines during the legislative session, including evening and weekend work. Additional paid time off will be available.

Position Summary

The Media Relations Specialist will assist and direct media strategy for Senate Majority Caucus members in pursuit of their communication plans. This position will provide direct writing and communication assistance across media (i.e., press releases, columns, newsletters, social media, and constituent communication), coordinate media outreach (i.e., individual pitches, media advisories, and radio/tv), and provide additional copywriting and editing with policy analysts/researchers for messaging guidance and internal caucus communications.

An ideal candidate will have experience working with the media and public. We seek someone who has strong writing and verbal communication experience to effectivity work with various media outlets.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Digital Communications, Graphic Design, Marketing, or related area of study.

OR

Two (2) years of experience in advertising, digital media, video, audio, public relations, market research, writing, journalism, or related.

In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

• Strong communication skills, both interpersonal and written.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the DFL Communications and Media team, Senators, and other staff to achieve caucus communication goals.
• Familiarity with Minnesota politics and the values of the Senate DFL Caucus.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality.
• Familiarity with social media and creative design platforms (i.e., Canva, Adobe Suite, Google Suite, Snagit Capture, Indigov, Wordpress and other CMS resources)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with members of the media and the public in a wide variety of situations and settings, including media pitches.
• Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process to communicate with caucus members, staff, and media on legislative issues.

• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple on-going projects.
