Job Summary
The Director of Student Accountability and Advocacy helps provide direct support to and serves as a non-clinical case manager and support role for students in crisis, on-going student outreach from the CARE (Consultation, Assessment, Referral, and Education) team, and assists with coordination of administrative case management for student of concern situations. The Director of Student Accountability and Advocacy is a strategic campus partner and thought leader in the support, advocacy and engagement of students, their families, faculty, and staff and will assist in identifying barriers to student success and helping to refer students to resources, both internal and external, that prioritize student well-being, student self-agency, safety, and overall student persistence.

The Director of Student Accountability and Advocacy is also responsible for the administration of Naropa’s student accountability processes which can include supporting other conduct officers, conducting investigations to adjudicate student misconduct, and related trainings and education for the campus community. This role will work to support and foster a university culture that promotes self-reflection, personal accountability, and integrity. In collaboration with the Dean of Students Office, Division of Mission, Culture, and Inclusive Community, and CARE team, the Director will support intervention needs and addressing behavioral concerns with a restorative and JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) focused lens. The Director of Student Accountability and Advocacy supports Naropa’s Title IX Coordinator as a named Deputy Title IX Coordinator and in collaboration with the Title IX Coordinator supports university-wide investigation, programing, and on-going training.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Case Management (40%)

• Serve as a member of the Naropa CARE (Consultation, Assessment, Referral, and Education) student support team under the direction of the CARE team co-chairs.
• Daily monitoring of student accountability (student conduct) and CARE in-person and online referrals and management of student accountability and CARE team files and record-keeping through the Maxient database.
• Assist the Dean of Students (DOS) and CARE team Co-Chair with CARE reporting processes to ensure case resolution and proactive tracking of student need patterns.
• Develop appropriate procedures and protocols for recording activities of the Student Accountability and CARE teams.
• Maintain a system of follow up for students who are referred to campus or community resources, including providing services to encourage compliance with recommendations and care/behavioral intervention plans.
• Train, advise, and consult with staff and faculty on promising practices for student accountability, restorative processes and student support including appropriate referrals, tracking data, and follow up with each case as appropriate.
• In collaboration with the Dean of Students Office, communicate with staff, parents, families, or designated emergency contacts regarding emergencies, including hospitalizations and suicide attempts and provide follow-up and reentry planning for students returning from treatment, extended leaves of absence, or other situations that might impact a student’s ability to resume coursework.
• Assist with facilitation of a successful return to campus when issues are appropriately resolved or following a student’s hospitalization and/or treatment.
• Implement non-clinical interventions to provide care, support and resources for students who have challenges with their health, wellness, academics, behavior, safety or their general welfare, basic needs resources, public benefit assistance and financial concerns.

Student Advocacy (30%)

• Serve as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator and confidential advocate to support work under direction of Naropa’s Title IX Coordinator through efforts such as educational outreach, trainings, and review of complaints as needed by providing subject-matter expertise on requirements of, and compliance with Title IX, VAWA, Campus SaVE, and related federal and state laws.
• Stay informed and abreast of national trends, legal findings, and promising practices through professional development and benchmarking as it relates to current research and policy administration and translating these practices to Naropa’s unique institutional environment.
• Serve an integral role in developing and implementing an assessment plan for the student accountability and advocacy processes. Assist with data collection and analysis. Write executive summaries and draft reports for review by other staff.
• Maintain a direct student outreach presence on campus through a variety of initiatives and efforts to develop relationships with the student body and articulate Naropa’s code of conduct, restorative/inclusive practices, harm reduction information and initiatives and student wellbeing and safety.
• Lead student accountability initiatives to coordinate and facilitate formative workshops; Train campus staff and students to assist with student accountability initiatives and hearing board(s); Assist members of the CARE team, Office of Inclusive Community, and Dean of Students Office with campus education of the Naropa student code of conduct and restorative student support resources, initiatives, and programs. This may include providing presentations to faculty/staff groups or to students or groups of students.
• Work with, and develop relationships with community partners to enhance support services available to Naropa students and employees.

Student Accountability Administration (25%)

• As part of a collaborative team, administrates matters of student accountability through the Naropa student code of conduct while employing professional discretion within a framework of student development and restorative practices which balances the needs of the community with the needs of the individual student.
• Cultivate collaborative relationships between various departments and divisions of the University, including all campuses and graduate programs, to support clear processes, procedures, communication, and information flow regarding community standards & the Naropa student code of conduct with the aim of enhancing a culture of equity and mutual respect.
• Actively employ restorative and reparative practices and processes in the student accountability remediation process whenever possible.
• In collaboration with the Inclusive Program Manager, provide ongoing training and consultation, and serve as an overall resource to the community on the implementation of restorative practices and other conflict resolution practices that support the creation of a conflict-positive community.
• Coordinates with the Dean of Students to craft individually based, constructive outcomes for a student that has violated University policies.
• Provide advice and guidance to faculty and staff facing complex issues regarding student behavior and determining the most appropriate approach to prescribed policies.
• Analyze information presented through the student accountability process and recommend outcomes to the Dean of Students that could include suspension and expulsion from the University.
• Serve as a resource to parents & families, staff, and faculty for a student participating in the student accountability process.
• Manage workflow and maintain accurate records for student accountability cases using Naropa’s case management system, Maxient.

Other Job Duties (5%)

• In collaboration with campus safety personnel and other relevant constituencies, develop and update protocols, policies, and procedures for responding to student emergencies, including the issuance of timely warnings and for managing threat assessment.
• Track, compile, and provide to campus safety personnel, in a timely manner, Clery reportable statistics. Serve as a Campus Security Authority.
• Along with other members, sit on the Threat Assessment Team to review, as needed, to review potential threat or risk management issues or concerns.
• Assist occasionally with the on-call rotation to support student emergencies and mental health crises for campus or those residing on campus in Naropa-managed accommodation.
• Assist with division and campus-wide program opportunities such as New Student Orientation, Commencement, Community Week, and others as needed.
• Provide support, as needed, for seasonal and time-limited needs such as Summer Conferences, and move-in/out.
• Assist the DOS office in a review of the student handbook including the student code of conduct and other university policies and procedures and make recommendations for amendments and modifications and to ensure accurate and up-to-date campus information and applicable college student policies and resources.
• Other special projects/duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in counseling, student development, social work, or an adjacent area.
• At least three (3) years of related professional experience (i.e., experience in handling student conduct cases, grievances, restorative justice work, student support or social work adjacent case management and/or conducting internal investigations).
• Knowledge of current state and federal law and regulations, identified proven practices and trends in the field of education related to student support/accountability, case management, harassment, and other discriminatory practices that violate Title IX or other state and federal laws.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Strong professional writing and documentation skills.
• Ability to build relationships and balance the multiple, varying, and even conflicting interests of diverse stakeholders around potentially challenging, divisive, or charged topics and information.
• Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education/the workplace.
• Willingness to co-create an inclusive community and actively participate in related professional development, including openness to feedback and on-going self-examination.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability and experience with student conduct and/or non-clinical case management within higher education with an understanding of trauma informed care.
• Knowledge of promising practices for student conduct/accountability and applicable state and national laws governing student rights/responsibilities, Title IX, VAWA, Campus SaVE, amongst others.
• Experience as a student conduct officer, social worker, or adjacent role/experience.
• Experience creating and supporting safety and behavioral intervention plans or learning agreements.
• Experience facilitating restorative conversations, circles, practices and/or programs.
• Experience designing and implementing restorative practices and/or programs.
• Experience working with and management of, Maxient records database.
• Experience with sexual violence prevention efforts.
