The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 683 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.
The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Management Division monitors the health and status of wildlife populations, developing and administering programs for their management and wise use and, when necessary, helping to resolve human-wildlife interactions in a manner assuring a diverse wildlife resource for future generations of North Carolinians. The division provides services in a variety of ways, including providing technical guidance to landowners wanting to manage wildlife on their lands and monitoring the health and status of wildlife populations. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a Game Mammal and Surveys Unit Supervisor for the Game & Furbearer Program.
The primary purpose of this position is to lead the Game Mammals and Surveys Unit. This unit works in concert with the similarly structured Game Birds and Wildlife Health Unit, and together these two units comprise the Game & Furbearer Program of the Wildlife Management Division. The Program’s mission is to
1) ensure the long-term viability and sustained harvest of 71 game and furbearer species by providing the best possible scientific information on the status and management of each species and its habitats so that regulations and management are based on objective data; and 2) participate in planning and coordination of management directives based on sound science. The Game Mammals and Surveys Unit is a newly created work unit that, once fully staffed, will consist of the agency’s Deer Biologist, Black Bear Biologist, Furbearer Biologist, Surveys Biologist, and a Special Projects Biologist.
The supervisor will lead the team by providing experienced-based guidance, direction, and assistance and will also be responsible for all administrative aspects of personnel supervision. The supervisor will provide counseling and guidance to these biologists to assist them in making decisions regarding work activities and scheduling; is responsible for initiating appropriate disciplinary measures and participating in grievance resolutions at the field level; and will review job applications and conduct interviews of prospective employees in the program. The supervisor will interact with biologists to provide leadership and guidance in the prioritization, organization, and implementation of all work unit activities.
Additionally, the supervisor will develop and monitor appropriate budgets and complete all state, agency, and federal administrative requirements associated with the work unit, the Game & Furbearer Program, and the Wildlife Management Division. The supervisor will report directly to the program’s Assistant Chief and will assist with administrative responsibilities required for the Game & Furbearer Program and the Wildlife Management Division. Furthermore, the supervisor will coordinate with other agency programs and divisions including the Divisions of Engineering, Land and Water Access, Inland Fisheries, Enforcement, and Conservation Education as well as the Wildlife Management Division’s Wildlife Diversity and Operations Programs to facilitate statewide continuity of game and furbearing species management.
The supervisor will coordinate with other public and private entities outside the agency in the administration of Game & Furbearer Program activities. Responsibilities include attending joint meetings with other agency and Division staff members, attending meetings with individuals and entities outside the agency, monitoring ongoing projects, providing technical expertise relative to overall activities, assisting with the implementation of work activities in the field, conducting regular work unit and project meetings to assess project status, reviewing activity and progress reports, and reviewing and approving purchases. The supervisor will ensure that efforts of the Game Mammals and Surveys Unit meet the agency’s research, surveys and management needs and that wildlife management activities are conducted in accordance with best available science and agency and state policies and procedures.
The position directly assists with program, division, or agency activities in the field as required to meet program and agency goals and objectives. Other duties are assigned as needed. This is a home-based position.
The workstation for this position is in the employee’s home-based office using agency provided computer, vehicle, tools, and other necessary equipment. The employee in this position is expected to provide home office space compliant with WRC and state policies. Candidates are expected to establish a home-based office within 150 miles of WRC Headquarters in Raleigh, NC.
Exceptions outside this parameter may be approved by division leadership. A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week (specific times set by manager). Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.
This position also requires frequent in-state and out-of-state travel with occasional overnight stays.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Documented experience using advanced principles of scientific method, biological techniques, zoology, botany, statistics, forestry, and ecology are necessary. Documented experience using biological principles and management practices as applied to wildlife biology and management, especially as they relate to deer, bear, furbearers, and wildlife surveys. Documented experience with wildlife habitat management, wildlife management, and wildlife diseases, especially as they relate to deer, bear, furbearers, and wildlife surveys.
Documented experience in taxonomic identification procedures, field, and laboratory techniques. Documented experience using methods and techniques for hunting, trapping and management of Human Wildlife Interactions. Demonstrated experience in training and supervising biologists and other specialized staff.
Documented experience preparing quality written reports and making oral presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other biologists, the public, and groups interested in wildlife. Ability to plan and direct work operations and field studies.
Management Preferences: Knowledge of biological statistics, scientific principles, and sampling techniques. Meet the qualifications of an Associate or Certified Wildlife Biologist from The Wildlife Society.
Special Qualifications/Requirements:Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 90 days of hire. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record.

Bachelor’s degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution, and five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
