Job
Summary:
Counseling & Psychological Services is seeking one Crisis Counselor. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE),
12-month, professional faculty position.
Oregon State University’s (OSU) Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is
strongly committed to affirming diversity in a broad sense, to treating all with dignity and respect, and to opposing discrimination,
prejudice, and oppression. Because OSU is a predominantly white institution (PWI), it is especially critical that we understand the
experiences and needs of non-dominant students and staff, and that we provide support that is specifically designed to meet those needs. We
recognize that, like most PWI’s, our ways of supporting students and staff from non-dominant groups have been inadequate, and we have begun
to work on doing better. This includes continually looking for ways to make our services more culturally responsive, including our hiring
practices. We consider cultural humility to be an essential qualification for any CAPS position and look for candidates who share this value
with us. We are an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer, and strongly encourage applications from members of historically
underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ+ community members, and others who demonstrate
the ability to help us achieve our vision of a diverse and inclusive community.
The Crisis Counselor position is a 12-month full-time
position that reports to a member of the CAPS senior leadership team (which includes the Executive Director, Senior Director of Clinical
Services, and Director of Training). The primary purpose of this position is to be part of a new mental health care intake team, CAPS
Access. This team (crisis specialist and triage counselors) will be responsible for assessing all students who call or walk in seeking
mental health care, becoming an integral part of helping the student quickly access professional help. The team will speak with the student
to determine their need(s) and then help the student get connected to a provider who can best meet their mental health concerns. Knowing
students may arrive in varying degrees of mental wellness, our CAPS Access team will be prepared to be the first point of contact for all
students, from those with need for minimal mental health support through those having an acute mental health crisis.
This Crisis
specialist will work collaboratively with our Triage Specialists and an interdisciplinary Treatment Team of therapists and support
professionals to meet the diverse mental health needs of our global student community. The Access team will provide culturally responsive
mental health services.
Typical duties include:
CAPS is committed to providing a range of culturally
responsive services to help students succeed. These services are designed to help students understand themselves better, create and maintain
satisfying relationships, improve their academic performance, foster resilience, and make healthy and satisfying career and life choices. We
do this by providing consultation, single session interventions, psychoeducation, web-based support, crisis support during business hours,
group counseling, and brief individual and relationship counseling when indicated. Additionally, if long-term care is needed, we will make
referrals to health care providers in the community.
