QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, criminology, psychology, or a closely related field of probation or correction or supplemented by four (4) years’ experience in probation or a parole field.
Knowledge of evidence-based practices is preferred. Knowledge of offender risk needs assessments and the ability to utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Interventions is essential. Experience in counseling techniques is preferred. The applicant must occupy the ability to successfully complete the ORAS risk needs assessment certification process. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of chemical dependency treatment options, Stages of Change, and available resources.
This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, along with attention to detail. Applicants must be able to work under pressure and in stressful situations. The ability to communicate well with other criminal justice agencies and treatment providers is necessary for this position. The position of Probation Officer requires strong analytical proficiencies along with good judgment and organizational skills. Other skills include the ability to work well with the public and have basic computer skills. Must have no legal prohibition against carrying a firearm, have a valid Ohio driver’s license and pass a background check.
DUTIES: Under direction, supervises probationers in both office and field settings; facilitates Evidence Based Interventions such as Thinking for a Change and Carey Guides, makes referrals to treatment providers, provides case management services, monitors compliance to court orders, addresses the offender’s criminogenic needs in areas of counseling, employment, educational training, etc., and attends court hearings and proceedings, as necessary. The Probation Officer will prepare reports and entries, as well as, work directly with Judges and Magistrates to provide clear and concise information and recommendations.
Demonstrates regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
